In classic March fashion, last month delivered plenty of weather whiplash to Iowa.
Temperatures topped 80 degrees on multiple days, but the state also experienced significant winter weather.
Two spring blizzards
Northwest Iowa was battered by snow and 50-60 mph winds exactly two weeks apart last month.
Both blizzards closed numerous roads and caused thousands of power outages. March 19's storm blanketed many areas with heavy snow, including over 14 inches in the Kossuth County town of Lakota.
Even in the Des Moines area, March ended up snowier than January this year.
First Iowa tornado of 2025
Last month's volatile weather also brought Iowa its first tornado of the year.
During March 14's severe storms, a brief tornado formed near the eastern Iowa town of Wilton.
According to a National Weather Service survey, the EF0 damaged a few trees, roofs, and farm outbuildings over a 2-mile path between Wilton and I-80 in Cedar County.
Exceptional March warmth
Many Iowa cities experienced record temperatures on multiple days last month.
In Des Moines, record highs were tied or set on March 10, 13 and 14. Mason City actually tied its warmest March temperature ever with a high of 84 degrees on March 28.
Last month was also central Iowa's sixth warmest March since records began in the 1870s.
