Goodbyes are never easy. Especially not when they're marshmallow. This spring, Lucky Charms is retiring the yellow hourglass marshmallow from their cereal boxes.
“The hourglass has been a part of Lucky Charms since 2008, but as with any hourglass, its time is up,” a General Mills representative . Technically though, an hourglass made of marshmallow doesn't actually have any sand in it, so....
When Lucky Charms debuted in 1964 the marshmallows — officially called “marbits” by General Mills — came in shapes of green clovers, pink hearts, orange stars and yellow moons. Of those original shapes, only the pink heart marshmallows remain. (The marshmallows were originally designed to represent charm bracelet charms — or the cereal's mascot Lucky the Leprechaun's charms, which are magic of course.)
Lucky Charms announced the sad news across their social media accounts yesterday, warning fans to “grab a box while you still can! " While the replacement marshmallow hasn’t been announced yet, they’re not giving out any hints as to what it is. “You’ll have to wait and see,” General Mills teased.
