Lipscomb basketball: What to know about Iowa State's first-round NCAA Tournament opponent
Iowa State is heading to the NCAA Tournament and will begin its run Friday afternoon vs. No. 14 seed Lipscomb.
The Cyclones earned a No. 3 seed in nearby Milwaukee and figure to have a significant crowd advantage in the first round. They'll tip off at 12:30 p.m. against Lipscomb, and the game will air on TNT.
Here's what to know about the game and about Iowa State's opponent.
Lipscomb basketball: Record, stats and more
- Location: Nashville, Tennessee
- Record: 25-9
- Conference: Atlantic Sun Conference (14-4; won ASUN Tournament championship)
NCAA Tournament history: This isn't Lipscomb's first trip to the Big Dance, but it's not far off. Lipscomb has played in one previous NCAA Tournament, losing as a No. 15 seed in the first round in 2018. That year, Lipscomb fell 84-66 to No. 2 seed North Carolina.
Iowa State vs. Lipscomb history: The Jordan Burgason game
The two teams have met once before, a 2011 regular season matchup at Hilton Coliseum.
One piece of Iowa State lore still exists from that game, which Iowa State won, 81-64. In one of the best shooting performances in Hilton Coliseum history, Lipscomb senior Jordan Burgason poured in 30 points. He drilled nine 3-pointers, which still stands as a Hilton Coliseum record for an opposing player.
Burgason is an Ames native who played two years alongside eventual NBA star Harrison Barnes at Ames High. Burgason was Ames' second-leading scorer as a junior and again as a senior before becoming one of the best shooters in all of college basketball.
Lipscomb players to watch, stats to know
This year's Lipscomb squad won't have any major Iowa State connections.
The Bisons are led by senior forward Jacob Ognacevic, who averages 20.1 points per game and adds 8.1 rebounds. He is in his fifth season (after not playing in 2023-24) and was named ASUN Player of the Year earlier this month.
Ognacevic is a dangerous outside shooter, making 40.2% of his attempts this year and averaging more than three attempts per game. He has made at least one 3-pointer in 14 of Lipscomb's last 15 games.
Fifth-year senior Will Pruitt is the star of Lipscomb's backcourt. He averaged 13.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game this year while starting every game and was named second-team All-ASUN.
In total, four different Bisons players average at least 1 made 3-pointer per game and shoot 35% or better from beyond the line. Their collective 3-point percentage of 36.7% ranks in the top 50 nationally, and their 56.7% efficiency inside the arc ranks in the top 25.
The Bisons have only played two games this year against power conference teams, losing in November at Arkansas, 76-60, and at Kentucky, 97-68. Lipscomb's shooting has failed in both games, going a combined 14-for-56 (25%) in those two contests.
Defensively, Lipscomb has not forced turnovers frequently (270th) and does not defend inside the arc well (137th in 2-point field goal percentage allowed). Iowa State will likely have the advantage inside.
