LifeServe says it's running out of plasma to assist COVID-19 patients
There is a critical need for a treatment that helps coronavirus patients recover. Central Iowa is running low on convalescent plasma. LifeServe Blood Center collects the plasma and sends it off to local hospitals. They said they're about two weeks away from running out. The plasma contains coronavirus antibodies. It's donated by people who have survived COVID-19 and helps people who currently have it fight the virus. Already, donors have given enough plasma to help around 4,000 people. For those who are thinking about donating, LifeServe says they need you to act now. "We're encouraging people to come in as soon as they can because we know the antibodies don't last forever," said Danielle West, with LifeServe Blood Center. "It's estimated around 60, 90 days, so if people can come in the sooner the better because they also have more antibodies in their system."Participants can donate every seven days for up to a month, then they need to take a month off before donating again. You can set up an appointment online at lifeservebloodcenter.org.
