JODI OKAY, SOUNDS LIKE A LIVELY FORECAST. ZANE. THANK YOU. WELL, LESS THAN JUST FIVE DAYS TO GO UNTIL THE GENERAL ELECTION AS WE’RE TAKING A LIVE LOOK FROM CAPITOL HILL IN WASHINGTON, DC RIGHT NOW. SO FAR, MILLIONS OF VOTERS NATIONWIDE HAVE ALREADY CAST THEIR BALLOTS, BUT MANY ARE WAITING TO HIT THE POLLS ON ELECTION DAY. THE ACLU IS SUING THE IOWA SECRETARY OF STATE ON BEHALF OF SOME NATURALIZED CITIZENS IN IOWA AND LULAC. THEY’RE FIGHTING THE SECRETARY OF STATE’S INSTRUCTION FOR POLL WORKERS TO CHALLENGE MORE THAN 2000 BALLOTS THAT HAVE BEEN, OR WILL BE FILLED OUT BY PEOPLE WHO ARE POTENTIALLY NON-CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES. vlog IS BEAU BOWMAN BREAKS DOWN EXACTLY WHAT COULD HAPPEN WITH THIS LAWSUIT BETWEEN NOW AND ELECTION DAY, AND WHAT IT ALL MEANS FOR THE OUTCOME. WE WERE ABLE TO CATCH UP TODAY WITH ATTORNEY GENERAL BRENNA BIRD AT A CAMPAIGN EVENT IN OSKALOOSA FOR MARIANNETTE MILLER-MEEKS. BURT SAYS THAT THIS WHOLE SITUATION BOILS DOWN TO JUST MAKING SURE THAT THE PEOPLE VOTING IN THE ELECTION ARE U.S. CITIZENS. WE ARE DEFENDING OUR ELECTION INTEGRITY LAWS HERE IN IOWA. IT SHOULD BE EASY TO VOTE AND HARD TO CHEAT. BURT WILL BE DEFENDING THE IOWA SECRETARY OF STATE, PAUL PATE, IN THE LAWSUIT THAT CLAIMS HIS INSTRUCTIONS TO CHALLENGE THE BALLOTS OF MORE THAN 2000 VOTERS DISCRIMINATES AGAINST THAT GROUP BASED ON THEIR NATIONAL ORIGIN AND THEIR STATUS AS NATURALIZED CITIZENS. WE ASK THAT ELECTION OFFICIALS HALT ALL EFFORTS TO PREVENT THESE IOWANS FROM VOTING BASED ON THIS DEMONSTRABLY INCORRECT, OUTDATED INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR CITIZENSHIP STATUS. THE 2000 PEOPLE ON THE LIST WERE FLAGGED BY PATE’S OFFICE AS POTENTIAL NON-CITIZENS. ON WEDNESDAY, PATE SAID HE INSTRUCTED POLL WORKERS TO HAVE THE PEOPLE ON THE LIST FILL OUT PROVISIONAL BALLOTS UNTIL THE STATE COULD VERIFY THEIR CITIZENSHIP STATUS. WE ARE LIMITED ON WHAT ACCESS WE HAVE TO CERTAIN FEDERAL DOCUMENTS, AND THAT HAS BEEN A FRUSTRATION. WE’VE BEEN FIGHTING AND DEALING WITH. AS WE REPEATEDLY PUT REQUESTS OUT TO THE FOLKS IN WASHINGTON, D.C., TO HAVE A COMPLETE LIST OF THOSE FOLKS WHO ARE LEGALLY HERE AND ARE NON-CITIZENS. PATE’S OFFICE RELEASED A STATEMENT THURSDAY SAYING HE ASKED THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FOR ASSISTANCE IN CLARIFYING CITIZENSHIP STATUS FOR THE PEOPLE ON THE LIST. HE SAYS THE DOJ REFUSED. BIRD’S OFFICE SENT A STATEMENT THURSDAY THAT SAYS THE DOJ CALLED THE STATE IN, QUOTE, AN ATTEMPT TO PRESSURE IOWA INTO LETTING NON-CITIZENS ILLEGALLY VOTE. IF THERE’S ANY MORE DETAIL YOU CAN GO INTO ABOUT WHAT WAS DISCUSSED ON THAT CALL WITH THE DOJ. NO, I THINK THE STATEMENT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. AND YOU’VE SEEN THE THE LAWSUIT TODAY. WE’RE GOING TO DEFEND OUR ELECTION INTEGRITY LAWS HERE IN IOWA. WE REACHED OUT TO THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TODAY LOOKING FOR COMMENT. THEY DECLINED. IN OSKALOOSA, BEAU BOWMAN vlog EIGHT NEWS, IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. BO. THANK YOU. NOW, vlog HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THIS INVESTIGATION INTO NONCITIZEN VOTING IN IOWA FOR OUR PAST COVERAGE. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the Iowa Secretary of State, representing the interests of some naturalized citizens and the League of United Latin American Citizens. The lawsuit challenges the instructions issued by Secretary of State Paul Pate to challenge over 2,000 ballots filled out, potentially, by individuals who may not possess U.S. citizenship, ahead of the election.Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird defended the intent of these actions, emphasizing election integrity at a recent campaign event. However, the ACLU contends that the questioning of these ballots is discriminatory, targeting individuals based on their national origin and naturalized citizenship status — a violation of the 14th Amendment.During ongoing discussions, Pate indicated that flagged individuals would be required to cast provisional ballots, pending verification of their citizenship. Pate blames this on limited access to federal documentation confirming individuals' legal statuses. Pate says his office reached out to the U.S. Department of Justice for assistance, but says they refused to share their information that could help in resolving the verification issues. vlog reached out to the Department of Justice, which declined to comment.
