A Des Moines wild bird rescue is calling on the public for support to ensure it can continue helping birds in need. Iowa Bird Rehabilitation center said, in 2024, it took in 3,187 sick or injured birds — a roughly 65% increase compared to years prior. At times, roughly 700 birds were at the facility, overwhelming caretakers. Facility Director Jenni Boonjakuakul said an unusually severe storm season was to blame for much of the increase. Now, she's concerned because the facility is at capacity as Iowa's bird migration and hatching season are just beginning. To keep pace with the need, Boonjakuakul said the Iowa Rehabilitation center needs to expand. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., a birdfeeder wash fundraiser will happen at the Wild Birds Unlimited nature shop to help Boonjakuakul fund the care for incoming birds this season and afford the necessary expansion. Donations can also be made here.
