King Charles III vows to serve 'with loyalty, respect, and love' in first address as monarch
and she has mourned most deeply in her passing that promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today alongside the personal grief that all my family are feeling we also share with so many of you in the United Kingdom, in all the countries where the queen was head of state in the commonwealth and across the world. *** deep sense of gratitude for the more than 70 years in which my mother as Queen, served the people of so many nations In 1947. On her 21st birthday, she pledged in *** broadcast from Cape Town to the commonwealth to devote her life, whether it be short or long, to the service of her peoples. Now to us more than *** promise, it was *** profound personal commitment which to find her whole life. She made sacrifices for duty. Her dedication and devotion as sovereign. Never wavered through times of change and progress through times of joy and celebration, and through times of sadness and loss in her life of service. We saw that abiding love of tradition, together with that fearless embrace of progress which makes us great as nations. The affection, admiration and respect she inspired, became the hallmark of her reign. And as every member of my family can testify, she combined these qualities with warmth, humor, and an unerring ability always to see the best in people. I pay tribute to my mother's memory, and I honor her life of service. I know that her death brings great sadness to so many of you and I share that sense of loss beyond measure with you all When the Queen came to the throne Britain and the world were still coping with the privations and aftermath of the Second World War And still living by the conventions of earlier times. In the course of the last 70 years, we have seen our society become one of many cultures and many faiths, the institutions of the State have changed in turn, but through all changes and challenges our nation and the wider family of realms of whose talents, traditions and achievements, I am so in expressively proud have prospered and flourished. Our values have remained and must remain constant. The room and the duties of monarchy also remain, as does the sovereign's particular relationship and responsibility towards the Church of England, the Church in which my own faith is so deeply rooted in that faith and the values it inspires. I have been brought up to cherish *** sense of duty to others and to hold in the greatest respect. The precious traditions, freedoms and responsibilities of our unique history and our system of parliamentary government, as the Queen herself did with such unswerving devotion, I too, now solemnly pledge myself throughout the remaining time, God grants me to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation and wherever you may live in the United Kingdom or in the realms and territories across the world and whatever may be, your background or beliefs, I shall endeavor to serve you with loyalty, respect and love as I have throughout my life. My life will of course change as I take up my new responsibilities, it will no longer be possible for me to give so much of my time and energies to the charities and issues for which I care so deeply. But I know this important work will go on in the trusted hands of others. This is also *** time of change for my family. I count on the loving help of my darling wife, Camilla In recognition of her own loyal public service since our marriage 17 years ago, she becomes my Queen Consort. I know she will bring to the demands of her new role. The steadfast devotion to duty on which I have come to rely so much as my heir. William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the duchy of cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades. Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales to whistle company. The country whose title I've been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty with Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center ground where vital help can be given. I want also to express my love for harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas in *** little over *** week's time. We will come together as *** nation as *** commonwealth and indeed *** global community to lay my beloved mother to rest in our sorrow. Let us remember and draw strength from the light of her example on behalf of all my family, I can only offer the most sincere and heartfelt thanks for your condolences and support. They mean more to me than I can ever possibly express. And to my darling mama as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late papa, I want simply to say this. Thank you, thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. And we were listening to some pretty poignant words coming from King Charles the third who just yesterday was prince Charles. As you know, his mother, Queen Elizabeth the second died peacefully. The royal family is saying with her family surrounding her Prince Charles among them who is now king Charles the third. Also Prince Andrew Edward Princess. And And you heard King Charles, they're really making *** pledge to not just the United Kingdom but the world when it comes to upholding the spirit and tradition of the monarchy. Um some really really beautiful words there from the king. Now the queen was always aware of the special relationship between her nation and the United States. She met with 13 presidents during her reign. We want to get you live right now, back to London because Giles is standing by for us Charles Peterson and he has more on what we just saw with the king. Giles. Are you with us? Yes, veronica, I can hear you. I was listening into that speech just *** few 100 m away from the gates of Buckingham Palace and just picking out *** few of the tributes firstly that prince Charles, excuse me now, King Charles the Third just gave to his mother, Queen Elizabeth the second. He said he would renew her promise Of life long service that promised that she gave all the way back in 1952 when she took the throne. He also talked *** lot about the Commonwealth, which it was such an important part of Queen Elizabeth II, his mother's time in on the throne. He then really sketched the sweep of history that she saw in her role as monarch. He talked about how she had taken over in the aftermath of World War Two and how the country the UK had changed into *** country of many cultures and many faiths. And then I thought it was just really interesting that throughout that speech, he was just weaving his story in with his mother's story, really trying to show *** sense of continuity that he was going to continue many of the traditions and really the style of ruling that we saw from her over all of those decades. He said that also that he shared the sense of loss that the people of the United Kingdom and the people around the world are feeling right now. So trying to establish that connection with his people with the people of the UK. And then just finally, he made it very clear the history is moving on that the line of succession is moving on. He told us that Prince William is now taking over that title of Prince of Wales that he's held for so many years. So throughout the day here we've had *** sense of mourning, *** sense of looking back and there was *** lot of that in that speech from king Charles, but we also had *** sense about how the firm, the royal family as it's known. They move on, they move on to the next stage and we see now king Charles the third naming Prince William now as Prince of Wales. So taking on that role that he held for so many years. Some really eloquent words there in such *** poignant speech and also tribute to not just his mother, but also his father as well. And Giles. Before we continue, I just wanted to apologize, I was smiling briefly because I know it's Giles Gibson and not Giles Peterson. So, my apologies there. I wanted to ask you um about king Charles and how the public perceives him because he does take the throne with the past. He has *** history that was somewhat controversial. How do you think that will impact his work? Well, that is really the big difference between the queen and now king Charles when they took over because of course the queen was in her mid twenties when she came to the throne. So she didn't have *** huge amount of history, *** huge amount of newspaper headlines, if you like. It was *** very different time. Whereas Prince Charles is coming to this at *** very late Stage in his life and there have been all of those headlines over the years. I mean, just, just one example, of course his divorce with from the former Princess of Wales from Princess Diana, which really caused so much friction between the British people and the monarchy back in the late 1990s. However, we also saw an attempt from Prince Charles as he arrived at Buckingham Palace just *** few hours ago to try and show that connection that he has with the british people. Despite that, that that passed with some friction as well. We saw him not just driving through the gates of Buckingham Palace just behind me there, he actually got out of the car as he arrived, he spoke to the crowd, he shook people's hands and I think we saw that in his speech as well, he's really trying to show this connection that he feels with the british people and the people of the commonwealth as well. Absolutely. That's truly, is *** pivotal moment in history, not just for the royal family, but really for the world with the passing of the Queen Giles, Gibson reporting live from London Giles. We appreciate it. Thank you.
