Kelly Clarkson reveals estranged father 'passed away months ago'

'Itā€™s just that sense of loss that I just donā€™t know if Iā€™ll ever not feel'

Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson and "The Voice" coach recently revealed sheā€™s coping with the loss of her estranged father. Clarkson opened up about her struggle to Forbes, while responding to a question about recently getting choked up during a performance of ā€œPiece by Piece.ā€ The emotional lyrics are famously written about her rocky relationship with her dad."That song for me, personally, behind the scenes, itā€™s evolved mostly for me. So, like, from the moment I wrote it, just being pregnant with my little girl and then, you know, all the moments that I really did try and make it work with my father and life and just get completely let down to where ā€¦," she said. "You know he passed away months ago. So thatā€™s why." She continued, "Itā€™s kind of that I think, you know, I donā€™t tell everyone that but, thatā€™s why everybody thinks Iā€™m just a nut case, but itā€™s just, itā€™s evolved." "Piece by Piece" contrasts her father with her husband, Brandon Blackstock, with whom she shares daughter River Rose and son Remy, and stepchildren Savannah and Seth. She recently explained that becoming a mom has only made the song more difficult for her to share. ā€œOnce you have kids, itā€™s one of those things,ā€ she told the crowd at her ā€œMeaning of Lifeā€ tour. ā€œI canā€™t even fathom about not sticking around and caring. I just canā€™t even fathom.ā€ Clarkson continued to tell Forbes that it "sucks to sing," but that she hopes eventually it will be "fine." Still, sheā€™ll continually grapple with the heartbreaking experience that inspired the song. "Itā€™s just that sense of loss that I just donā€™t know if Iā€™ll ever not feel just because Iā€™m a mom, Iā€™m a mom of two kids that arenā€™t even from my womb that I still couldnā€™t imagine treating (them) the way that I was (treated)," she said. "I think that was just a really hard one for me still. But I have to sing it and I get it."
