Folks on Des Moines Southeast side witnessed this dramatic site this afternoon high atop *** tall grain elevator. Two painters were changing the old Agra industry sign to reflect the new owner's Avon Grain Company. When one side of the scaffold broke loose, painter, Ray Crook was able to remain standing on his side of the scaffold. But his partner Dave Nicol was left dangling about 225 ft in the air. The Des Moines Fire Department's ladder came up short by about 100 ft. After *** half hour firemen finally got to *** window about 10 ft above the stranded men, lowered them *** rope and pulled them to safety. Fire officials called it *** dangerous situation and said the men were lucky to escape. It was 225 ft in the air. So anything could have happened. They got out. All right, the two painters were unhurt and said something on the roof which they had tied the scaffold rope to broke off uh good safety equipment and everything and we uh wrapped cables up around stuff up on top. And uh what we had it wrapped on, broke loose from the roof and then the cable dropped and luckily my safety rope caught me. So that's all I needed. Ok. Now, what, what, what did you do then? Just hung there till somebody came and pull me up for his partner. Ray Crook. It was all in *** day's work. Were you afraid at all? No, I don't have to go do it again. Dave Buick TV. Eight News.

Some folks on the south side of Des Moines might still remember this scene from 1987, when two painters changing signage on the side of a grain elevator were left dangling more than 200 feet in the air after their scaffolding broke loose. One of the men was able to stay on the perch while the other was saved by his safety rope. It took 30 minutes but, eventually, firemen were able to safely pull the men up into a window. It was all in a day's work, according to the pair of painters, neither of which was injured. Watch the video above for the harrowing sight.
