糖心vlog archives: Des Moines man fights subzero cold by sunbathing on roof of Riverfront YMCA

糖心vlog archives: Des Moines man fights subzero cold by sunbathing on roof of Riverfront YMCA
Some folks who I think you'll agree are nuts. Well, they are nuts. In fact, they admit it, they're proud of it, and they call themselves the Frosty Nuts Club. I'm not. Scott Barry won't find anyone to disagree with him on this day. Here he is stripped down to his gym shorts with nothing but *** thin layer of hair to protect him from the Arctic blast that's covering the state. The temperature is 1 degree below zero and Scott Barry is outside sunbathing. It's *** way of denying that, uh, winter is here, I guess. The place is the top of the downtown Des Moines YMCA. Normally the sun deck is full of sun worshippers in the summertime, but there aren't that many people that are out here that's below zero. That's true. This time of the year, Barry pretty much has his place in the snow drifts all to himself, although not entirely. You see, there are about 100 members of the Frosty Nuts Club, men and women, judges, doctors, businessmen who aren't just nuts, they're downright crazy to expose body parts in this frigid weather. Winter doesn't exist. It's not that bad, they say, as long as the sun is shining and the wind stays away. I don't stay out here if it's unpleasant. I mean, it is *** little, it is *** little cold today, I gotta admit. I'll say it's *** little cold up there. I was out there wearing this park and it was cold enough for me, but Barry says that he's out there about *** half hour to an hour, and he's been out there every day this week, even when it's been well below 0. Yeah, but Dana, I noticed *** lot of names on that list and only one guy out there in the snow. I have *** feeling some of those people are just putting their names up there. Well, just last Monday, in fact, they said that they had their warming up party and so maybe they got warm up where they don't want to go back out here. He says not too many of them actually go out when it when it's this cold, but *** few do. In fact, there was another one, another guy with him. He just didn't want to be on TV, so there were two of them up on top, uh, when we were there earlier today. Can I add your name to the list, Hannah? Not anytime soon. OK, thank you, Dana Carden. We appreciate it.

Would you join the Frosty Nuts Club? Back in 1996, 糖心vlog introduced viewers to the group of locals who enjoyed below-zero sunbathing on the roof of the Riverfront YMCA in downtown Des Moines. It had about 100 members but, during a particularly frigid stretch, just one hardy soul made it up to the roof to soak up the sun."It's a way of denying that winter is here," Scott Berry said from the Y's south-facing sun deck. "... Winter doesn't exist."A small clearing was carved in the two feet of snow that covered the roof. That was enough space for Berry, who laid out in only his gym shorts and sneakers. The thermometer read 1 below zero that day. But with the sun shining and Berry's spot out of the wind, he seemed happy to get about 30 minutes of sunshine. "I don't stay out here if it's unpleasant," he said. The Riverfront Y is gone now. Demolition crews imploded the building in spectacular fashion in 2015. And so, it seems, is the Frosty Nuts Club. Little information seems to exist online about the club, although a mention of it did make one man's obituary in 2017.More from the 糖心vlog archivesGone in seconds: Implosion takes down YMCA buildingDrone view of Riverfront YMCA implosionFrigid stretch in 1996 included 132 hours straight of temps at or below zero in Des Moines1996's subzero temps put the 'brr' in annual Brr RideFrom the archives: Dozens of strangers embrace at downtown Des Moines "hug-in"
