Abortion debate intensifies ahead of November elections

Abortion debate intensifies ahead of November elections
ONE PRIMARY. THE ELECTION BATTLE OVER ABORTION IS ALREADY HEATING UP, AS GROUPS ON BOTH SIDES ARE GEARING UP FOR NOVEMBER. MORE THAN A DOZEN STATES COULD HAVE ABORTION RELATED MEASURES ON THE BALLOT IN NOVEMBER, AND, NOT SURPRISINGLY, WE’RE STARTING TO SEE SOME BIG NAMES ADDRESSING THE ISSUE, WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT KALYN NORWOOD SPOKE ONE ON ONE, WITH ONE OF THEM, VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS. CAITLIN, WHAT IS THE ADMINISTRATION DOING? YEAH, JANE, VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS IS LEADING THE ADMINISTRATION PUSH TO PROTECT ABORTION ACCESS BY TAKING THIS ISSUE ON THE ROAD. BUT ANTI-ABORTION GROUPS SAY THERE ARE ALSO JUST GETTING STARTED. ABORTION BACK ON THE BALLOT IN 2024, AS MANY AS 13 STATES COULD TAKE UP CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS THAT WOULD RESTRICT OR PROTECT ACCESS. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE TELLING THAT WOMAN WHAT TO DO WITH HER BODY. I HAD THE CHANCE TO SPEAK ONE ON ONE WITH VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS AS SHE KICKS OFF HER NATIONWIDE TOUR TO PROTECT ACCESS. WE HAVE SEEN STATES ACROSS OUR COUNTRY PASSING THESE LAWS THAT CRIMINALIZE DOCTORS AND PUNISH WOMEN, INCLUDING IN SOME STATES, NO EXCEPTION, EVEN FOR RAPE OR INCEST, WHICH IT’S IMMORAL, I BELIEVE. BUT REALISTICALLY, HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU DO NOW THAT IT IS REALLY UP TO THE STATES AND CONGRESS IS HAVING A CONGRESS THAT WILL PUT BACK IN PLACE THE PROTECTIONS OF ROE JOE BIDEN. OUR PRESIDENT HAS BEEN VERY CLEAR WHEN THAT HAPPENS, HE WILL SIGN IT INTO LAW. ABOUT HALF OF STATES IN THE U.S. HAVE FULL BANS OR ABORTION RESTRICTIONS. NOW, ANTI-ABORTION GROUPS SAY THE 2024 FIGHT IS TO KEEP THOSE IN PLACE. WE HAVE TEN PRO-LIFE STATES THAT COULD BE TARGETED IN 2024 FOR A BALLOT MEASURE. AND WHAT’S AT STAKE THERE IS LAWS THAT PROTECT 30,000 LIVES ANNUALLY. THE ANTI-ABORTION GROUP SUSAN B ANTHONY TOLD ME. THEY’LL ALSO PUSH FOR NATIONAL BAN. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE AND WHAT YOU’RE REALLY HOPING TO SEE HERE? YEAH, WE ARE SUPPORTIVE OF. OF OF PROTECTING BABIES AT THE POINT THAT THEY CAN FEEL PAIN NATIONALLY. THAT IS A 15 WEEK PROTECTION IN OUR ANTI-ABORTION GROUPS SAY THAT THEY’RE FOCUSED ON ELECTING A NEW LEADER TO THE WHITE HOUSE TO REACH THAT GOAL. PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS SAID IF CONGRESS EVER PASSED A NATIONAL BAN, HE’D VETO IT. JANE. WELL, CAITLIN, LOOKING AHEAD TO THE GENERAL ELECTION COMING UP IN NOVEMBER, THERE ARE NEW SIGNS THAT THE GENDER GAP BETWEEN SUPPORTERS OF THE TWO PARTY FRONTRUNNERS IS GROWING. JANE, YOU’RE RIGHT ABOUT THAT. AND A POTENTIAL REMATCH, A REMATCH BETWEEN PRESIDENT BIDEN AND FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP. THAT GENDER GAP IS WIDENING. AT LEAST IT APPEARS TO BE SO. ACCORDING TO A NEW QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL SHOWS THAT MORE WOMEN WOULD SUPPORT PRESIDENT BIDEN OVER FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP AND THAT 58 TO 36%. IT ALSO SHOWED THAT IN AN OVERALL REMATCH, PRESIDENT BIDEN NOW HAS A SLIG
