Iowa’s mystery mural can’t be seen from the street

Iowa’s mystery mural can’t be seen from the street
ERIC: SPOT A MASKED MAN ABOVE A DOWNTOWN ALLEY AND YOU MIGHT THINK THAT AEROSOL CAN’S FULL OF TROUBLE. >> PEOPLE SEE ME HOLDING A SPRAY CAN AND IMMEDIATELY THINK OF VANDALISM. ERIC ARCY IS THE GUY ON HIS : KNEES, BEGGING YOU TO RECONSIDER. BECAUSE HE JUST SPENT A WEEK IN JEFFERSON, CREATING A MURAL THAT LEFT EVERY BRICK IN TOWN UNTOUCHED. ARCY, RYAN CHRISTENSON, TOOK HIS PALATE OF 70 DIFFERENT COLORS WHERE NO ONE ON THE STREET CAN SEE. THE ROOFTOP OF THE TWO STORY BUILDING AT THE CORNER OF LINCOLN WAY AND CHESTNUT. >> IT IS A LITTLE STRANGE, ISN’T IT? ERIC: BECAUSE EVEN AN AEROSOL NOVICE KNOWS WHAT YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO. SO WHY WOULD A WORLD REKNOWNED ARTIST WHO HAS GORGEOUS WORK STRETCHING FROM PORTUGAL TO GREECE CLOG HIS SPRAYER HERE, IN GREENE COUNTY? >> I’VE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE. I’VE NEVER PAINTED A ROOFTOP. ERIC THE CHALLENGE OF FULFILLING : DEB MCGINN’S DREAM. >> ANYBODY COULD PUT A MURAL ON THE SIDE OF A BUILDING. NOT MANY COULD PUT THEM ON TOP OF A ROOF. ERIC: A FEW YEARS AGO, SHE WAS UP INSIDE GREENE COUNTY’S MOST WELL KNOWN LANDMARK THE MAHANAY BELL TOWER ADMIRING THE VIEW. WHEN SHE DECIDED ART FROM UP HERE WOULD BE AMAZING. >> YOU COULD ONLY SEE IT FROM ATOP THE BELL TOWER. ERIC: AND THIS WEEK? THE OBSERVATION DECK 12 STORIES OVER GREENE COUNTY HAVE BEEN PACKED WITH ART LOVERS WATCHING ARCY’S MAN COME TO LIFE, WHILE MOMS IN MINIVANS BELOW HAVE NO IDEA THAT MAGIC’S UNFOLDING TWO STORIES ABOVE THEM. >> I LOVE IT, I LOVE THE CHALLENGE. ERIC: HIS MURAL’S THE FIFTH ON JEFFERSON’S ROOFTOPS. >> PEOPLE SAID WE ARE CRAZY TO DO IT, BUT IT’S GAINING MOMENTUM AND IT’S SOMETHING UNIQUE. THAT’S WHAT PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR, SOMETHING UNIQUE. ERIC: LIKE HANGING OUT WITH JEFFERSON’S BEAUTIFUL BELLS, TO WATCH 300 AEROSOL CANS TRANSFORM MORE THAN JUST A ROOF. TAKE A LOOK, HE JUST FINISHED SATURDAY AND LEFT TOWN KNOWING THAT THE ONLY WAY ANYONE CAN SEE THE DETAIL IN THIS PORTRAIT OF A TYPICAL IOWA FARMER IS TO TAKE THE ELEVA

Iowa’s mystery mural can’t be seen from the street
All week, people on the square in Jefferson have been trying to figure out what's going on two stories above them. That’s because a guy with hundreds of spray cans has been creating a mystery. You can't see it from the street, and that's the point."Anybody can put a mural on the side of a building," said Deb McGinn, chair of Tower View Team. "Not many can put them on the top of a roof."A few years ago, she was in Greene county's most well-known landmark: The Mahanay Bell Tower. She was admiring the view when she decided art from up there would be amazing. "You can only see it from the top of the bar tower," McGinn said. This week, the observation deck 12 stories over Green County have been packed with art lovers watching Ryan "ARCY" Christenson's art come to life. "I love the challenge," Christenson said. "Like, I eat it up. You know?"His mural is the fifth on Jefferson's rooftops."People said we were crazy to do it," said Jamie Daubendiek, with Jefferson Telecom. "But it's gaining momentum and it's something unique. That's what people are looking for is something unique." ARCY finished Saturday and left town knowing the only way anyone can see his artwork is to take the elevator to the top of Jefferson's bell tower.
