Iowa weather: Strong storms return Thursday
Wednesday has turned out to be a beautiful, albeit windy day. Temperatures have climbed into the mid-70s across much of the state and we'll likely be back there tomorrow.

Strong southerly flow ahead of an area of low pressure to our west will not only pump up our temperatures but will keep Thursday very windy and also help to drive in abundant moisture across the state.
Dewpoints Wednesday have been in the 20s to low 30s and will surge into the 50s to low 60s Thursday. This will provide ample energy for storms later in the day to tap into. We'll likely see some showers to start the day and possibly some weaker variety thunderstorms with a bit of a gap for much of the day though we'll see clouds linger.
An elongated area of low pressure will push in from the west bringing in the chance for showers and thunderstorms to form along a cold front again by the evening. With the elevated nature of these storms, the primary threat will be large hail and perhaps a damaging wind gust.
The tornado threat at this time looks rather low, though if we do see any of these storms become surface-based, which may be briefly possible in northwest Iowa around sunset... a tornado may be possible. This would be a highly conditional and brief window.
Storms move out of the state by around midnight with a few showers possibly lingering into the early morning hours Friday.
Temperatures Friday look cooler and in the low 60s as gusty northwest winds return pushing in colder air along with cloudy skies. Temperatures continue to cool into the weekend with highs dropping into the upper 50s to low 60s Saturday and mid-50s Sunday.
We'll have a brief reprieve from the winds Saturday, and combined with the dry conditions should make for some decent weather for any Easter egg hunting you have planned.
Another area of low pressure will surge northward from Missouri, Sunday, bringing in more substantial chances for rain. Models have trended slightly south with the system keeping much of the rain in the southeastern half or so of the state. Rainfall amounts from this system will be as high as an inch throughout portions of southern and especially southeastern Iowa.
After this system departs weak high pressure gives us a break Monday with mostly sunny skies and temperatures pushing back into the middle 60s. Southerly flow returns yet again ahead of our next area of low pressure centered in the Dakotas will be that will drag a cold front across the state Tuesday. This will push our temperatures back into the low 70s and provide more chances for much needed rain, though at this point it looks like any significant rainfall may stay just south of the Missouri border leaving Iowa with 1/4" or less. Model agreement isn't exactly stellar at this point which will likely mean much more fine tuning with the timing and rainfall totals as we get closer. 70s stick around into Wednesday with drier conditions by the middle of the week.
