Iowa weather: Gusty winds drive us to near-record warmth Friday
The gusty winds of Spring return Friday and help push us to near-record warmth.
Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts
Highs will top out in the upper 70s to low 80s across much of the state with mid 80s possible in far western Iowa.
It may not be the most enjoyable warmup, however, as gusty winds up to 40mph will help us reach those higher temperatures. This is thanks to an elongated area of low pressure pushing into the state that'll bring in rain and storm chances late Friday, late Saturday, and Sunday.
Chances at severe weather are low, though with the storms late Friday and Sunday we may see some brief hail-makers. Temperatures cool off as the area of low pressure pushes through driving our temperatures back into the 60s Saturday and mid to upper 40s Sunday and Monday.
As the low departs late Sunday into Monday some of us will have the potential to even see some flakes of snow mixing in with our rain. Best chances for this will be through the northern 1/4 or so of the state. Winds pick up again Tuesday as another deep center of low-pressure approaches from the mountain west. This will bring in more chances for rain and even snow depending which track the low takes.
At this point it's too far out to know specific details of the storm track, timing, and possible amounts as models are still not in agreement as to how it will play out. Temperatures do warm up though riding the strong winds with highs back in the mid 50s Tuesday and mid 60s Wednesday.
