Iowa weather: Spring severe thunderstorms return Friday
ITā€™S ART INDUCING. ITā€™S SO COOL. SO YEAH, IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO SEE IT, I THINK THE CLOUDS WILL COOPERATE. I THINK WEā€™LL BE IN GOOD SHAPE AROUND THAT TIME. WEā€™LL LIKELY HAVE SOME CLOUDS FLOATING AROUND, BUT WE WONā€™T BE SEEING THIS JUST YET. THIS IS TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING, BUT LETā€™S GET TO IT HERE AGAIN. DAMAGING WINDS ARE THE GREATEST RISK WITH THIS SYSTEM. THEREā€™S AT LEAST SOME POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED LARGE HAIL. BUT THAT FLASH FLOODING THREAT, AS WE TALKED ABOUT AND THE TORNADO THREAT ARE LOW WITH THIS, WEā€™VE BEEN WATCHING THE MOISTURE THAT WILL HAVE TO WORK WITH AS WE WORK OUR WAY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. AND YOU LOOK WEST OF 35, ESPECIALLY, AND WEā€™RE TALKING DEW POINTS IN THE MID TO UPPER 40S, ITā€™S NOT A LOT OF MOISTURE FOR THOSE STORMS TO TAP INTO. EAST OF 35. ITā€™S A LITTLE BETTER IN THE LOW TO MID 50S, BUT WHEN YOU REALLY START TO TALK ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR TORNADIC SYSTEMS, YOUā€™D LIKE TO SEE THOSE NUMBERS UPWARDS CLOSER TO 55, EVEN 60. AND WHEN YOU DONā€™T GET THAT, YOU GET REALLY HIGH BASED STORMS. AND ITā€™S HARD TO TAKE THAT ROTATION ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE GROUND WHEN YOUā€™RE IN THAT TYPE OF SITUATION. SO LETā€™S TRACK THIS OUT FOR YOU HOUR BY HOUR. THURSDAY. ITā€™S BEEN PRETTY NICE. TOMORROW MORNING, I THINK IS GOING TO BE BEAUTIFUL AS WELL. WE WAKE UP TEMPERATURES IN THE 50S SHOULD SEE A DECENT AMOUNT OF SUNSHINE, BUT HERE COMES THE STORMS. MAYBE A WEAK ONE OUT AHEAD OF THE MAIN LINE. HEREā€™S THAT MAIN LINE FROM OMAHA DOWN TOWARDS AROUND LAMONI. THATā€™S AT 4 P.M. WATCH HOW QUICKLY THIS MAKES ITS WAY TO THE METRO. YEAH, 5 P.M. ITā€™S ON OUR DOORSTEP. THIS IS GOING TO BE MOVING AROUND 60MPH. DONā€™T THINK YOUā€™RE GOING TO STEP OUTSIDE AND OR DRIVE AROUND AND TRY TO SEE THIS, BECAUSE IT IS GOING TO BLOW PAST YOU AS IT PUSHES ITS WAY ON THROUGH. 7 P.M., ARCING FROM SIOUX CITY ALL THE WAY DOWN TOWARDS OTTUMWA. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT NORTHERN EDGE KIND OF DIES OUT A LITTLE BIT AS IT PUSHES UP INTO MINNESOTA. NOT AS GOOD OF AIR UP THERE, BUT AREAS TO THE EAST AND TO THE SOUTH ARE GOING TO STRENGTHEN AS THEY RACE THEIR WAY EAST ALONG I-80 TOWARDS DAVENPORT. BUT BY MIDNIGHT, THIS IS ALL OUT OF OUR HAIR AND YOU CAN SEE WE STILL HAVE SOME LINGERING SHOWERS AND THEN A BAND OF RAIN THAT WILL TRANSITION OVER TO SNOW UPWARDS INTO NEBRASKA AND SOUTH DAKOTA, WHERE THEY COULD ACTUALLY SEE A DECENT AMOUNT OF SNOW. AND WITH THE WINDS THERE, POTENTIAL FOR WHITEOUT CONDITIONS IN SPOTS, MAKING IT REALLY DIFFICULT TO TRAVEL, THERE IS SOME POTENTIAL. WE PICK UP A LIGHT DUSTING OF SNOW THROUGH SOME OF THOSE NORTHWESTERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE, BUT THAT WILL BE ABOUT IT FOR OUR CHANCES. WITH SNOW. WITH THIS SYSTEM AND WIND, THOUGH, IS GOING TO BE THE MAIN CULPRIT. AS WEā€™VE TALKED ABOUT, JUST GENERAL ATMOSPHERIC WINDS SHOULD BE AROUND 40 45MPH FOR GUSTS, AND WHEN YOU GET TAKEN UP IN THIS LINE OF STORMS, WEā€™LL LIKELY SEE SOME POCKETS OF 60, EVEN 70 MILE PER HOUR WINDS EMBEDDED WITHIN THAT LINE. AND THEN SATURDAY WEā€™RE ON THE BACKSIDE OF THIS SYSTEM AND IT IS JUST GOING TO BE VERY WINDY OUT THERE AS WELL. AS FAR AS RAINFALL, NOT LOOKING AT A HUGE RAINMAKER, YOU GET FAST MOVING SYSTEMS LIKE THIS AND THEY JUST DONā€™T SPEND THAT MUCH TIME OVER THE SAME LOCATIONS. SO ITā€™S HARD TO GET A LOT OF RAINFALL OUT OF THAT QUARTER INCH TO A HALF AN INCH. PROBABLY BE, Iā€™D SAY, BEST CASE SCENARIO, IF YOUā€™RE LOOKING FOR A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN OUT OF THIS, BUT DONā€™T EXPECT A LOT AND DONā€™T EXPECT MUCH SNOWFALL AREAS TO THE NORTHWEST AGAIN WILL HAVE A CHANCE AT A LITTLE BIT OF A LIGHT DUSTING, BUT THATā€™S REALLY ALL I CAN PROMISE YOU. BUT WE STILL HAVE WIND ADVISORIES IN PLACE FOR EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE. GUSTS UPWARDS TO 45MPH, AND WEā€™LL HAVE FIRE WEATHER RISK OUT THERE TOMORROW AS WELL. YOU CAN SEE THAT BACKS DOWN AS WE HEAD INTO THE DAY ON SATURDAY. BUT EIGHT DAY FORECAST. WEā€™RE COOLING DOWN ON SATURDAY, DOWN TO 47. WE LOSE 31 DEGREES. THINK OF THE POWER OF THAT SYSTEM. AFTER THAT, WEā€™RE BOUNCING BACK INTO THE 70S BY MONDAY FOR SAINT PATRICKā€™S DAY. ANOTHER SYSTEM THAT COULD EVEN

Iowa weather: Spring severe thunderstorms return Friday
The south breeze will continue overnight, helping to keep temperatures mild into Friday morning. Low temperatures likely only fall into the mid-50s, staying above our average high for the middle of March.Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts Friday will bring back the strong winds and severe thunderstorm threat. The strong area of low pressure that we have ben tracking all week will be approaching Iowa. As it gets closer, Friday morning will see increasing winds with gusts on the order of 35 to 50 mph by the lunch hour, which will last through the afternoon as well. Temperatures may be a few degrees warm than Thursday, pushing into the upper 70s in the metro, with parts of eastern Iowa possibly approaching 80 degrees. The combination of very warm conditions, dry air, and gusty winds will produce high fire danger across the area.Thunderstorms are expected to rapidly develop during the afternoon hours, generally after 3pm. Storms initially form in far southern and southwest Iowa, and then race to the north and east at 50 to 60mph. That quick storm motion means storms will not last long in any one spot, but will pack a punch as they roll through. The quick movement of the storms will make it very easy for them to produce severe wind gusts on the order of 60 to 70mph. The high winds will be the main risk with any storms, though a few pockets of hail are possible, but should not be widespread. Once the storms start, they will organize into a line of storms that would favor those strong wind gusts. The good news is the tornado threat is on the low side for most of Iowa, though an isolated tornado can't be completely ruled out, especially over eastern portions of the state. very dry air is expected to be in place at ground level, which is not favorable tornado formations. The highest threat for any tornadoes to spin up will be over the southeastern edge of the state and farther to the south and east into Illinois and Missouri. After the storms push out, the winds will bring in colder temperatures for the weekend. Expect another windy day Saturday with temps staying in the 30s and 40s along with a hard freeze for Sunday morning. Some lingering showers will be possible, but mainly in the morning hours on Saturday. The winds will downgrade to breezy on Sunday with mostly sunny skies and cool conditions. Temps will rebound for Monday. We are keeping an eye on an interesting system that could bring another round of rain and possibly snow mid-next week.
