Iowa weather: Cold on the way in with another chance for snow this weekend

Iowa weather: Cold on the way in with another chance for snow this weekend
THAT’S PROBABLY A GOOD MOVE. PROBABLY A GOOD MOVE. OH, YEAH. I MEAN, WE’VE GOT THE COLD ON THE WAY, AND WE’VE GOT THE SNOW TO GO ALONG WITH IT. AND AS SOME OF US WILL SEE, THAT SNOW IS GOING TO PUSH ITS WAY THROUGH SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE, PUT DOWN A NICE LITTLE AMOUNT AS WE WORK OUR WAY THROUGH SATURDAY. YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THOSE SNOW SHOWERS PUSHING THEIR WAY THROUGH SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF SOUTH DAKOTA AND INTO NORTHEASTERN NEBRASKA. THAT WILL EVENTUALLY GROW EASTWARD. SO 8:00 PM SATURDAY NIGHT. WE ALREADY HAVE THAT SNOW FLY IN LAMONI, CENTERVILLE RATHBUN LAKE EASTWARD TOWARDS MOUNT PLEASANT. THAT IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO BUILD IN. BUT RECENT MODEL TRENDS HAVE SHIFTED IT EVEN FURTHER TO THE SOUTH. NOT A BIG JUMP, BUT IF THAT TREND CONTINUES, WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO SEE THE HEAVIER SNOWFALL TOTALS GO ALONG WITH THAT. BUT STILL LOOKS LIKE AREAS LIKE LAMONI IN THAT SOUTHERN ROW OF COUNTIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE COULD PICK UP, I’D SAY EVEN 3 OR 4IN OF SNOW OUT OF THIS SYSTEM. SO FACTORS WORKING AGAINST THIS. YOU CAN SEE JUST A POTENT LOW PUSHING ITS WAY THROUGH OKLAHOMA, KANSAS AND INTO MISSOURI AS WELL. GOT AN AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE TO THE NORTH THOUGH. THAT’S GOING TO BE FIGHTING THIS THING AND TRYING TO SHOVE IT SOUTH. NOT ONLY IS IT GOING TO TRY TO CHANGE ITS TRACK, IT’S GOT DRY AIR THAT IT’S PUSHING DOWN FROM THE NORTH THAT’S GOING TO BE EATING AWAY AT SOME OF THIS MOISTURE. SO AREAS NORTH OF I-80 LIKELY NOT GOING TO PICK UP ON MUCH OUT OF THIS. AND REALLY, IF THIS DOES CONTINUE TO SHIFT SOUTH, WE MAY SEE AREAS OSCEOLA SOUTHWARD BE THE ONLY ONES THAT PICK UP MUCH OF ANY SNOW. SO AS WE LOOK AT WHERE THE HEAVIEST IS, THIS IS GOING TO LAND RIGHT NOW, YOU CAN SEE THAT THROUGH NORTHWESTERN MISSOURI. I WOULD IMAGINE AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW, WE’LL SEE THIS GENTLY SHIFT TO THE SOUTH TO ACCOMMODATE FOR SOME OF THOSE TRACK SHIFTS THAT WE’RE SEEING IN THE MODELS. BUT THIS STILL HAS ENOUGH TIME WHERE IT COULD SHIFT BACK TO THE NORTH. WE’VE GOT TO KEEP AN EYE ON THIS. WHAT I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT WITH THIS RIGHT NOW, TOTALS STILL NOT NAILED DOWN. I KNOW EVERYBODY WANTS TO HEAR HOW MUCH AM I GOING TO GET ON SUNDAY? WELL, WITH HOW INCONSISTENT MODELS ARE RIGHT NOW WITH THE TRACK OF THIS HARD TO PIN DOWN THOSE TOTALS JUST YET, AND WE STILL DON’T KNOW HOW IMPACTFUL THAT AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE TO THE NORTH IS GOING TO BE, AS THAT COULD EAT AWAY SOME OF THAT MOISTURE AND AGAIN, CHANGE THE TRACK OF THAT. THAT’S WHY THE TRACK, THE TIMING AND THE TRACK ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO CHANGE. EITHER WAY, YOU SHAKE IT RIGHT NOW. HEAVIEST LOOKS TO BE THROUGH MISSOURI. WE WILL STILL LIKELY SEE SNOW ACROSS THE STATE. COULD SEE SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW THROUGH SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE, BUT ANY SHIFT IN THAT TRACK WILL TAKE THOSE HEAVIER TOTALS ALONG WITH IT. THAT’S WHY WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THOSE AS WE START TO GET A LITTLE BIT CLOSER. SO IT IS STILL A FEW DAYS AWAY. PLENTY OF TIME FOR STUFF TO CHANGE, BUT WE ARE WEATHER IMPACT FOR THAT DAY, FOR THE POTENTIAL FOR THAT SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL. FOR SOME OF US. BUT EVEN IF YOU DON’T GET THE SNOW, YOU’RE GETTING THE COLD. WE’RE IN THE TEENS FOR HIGHS AS WE HEAD THROUGH NEXT WEEK. OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK.

Iowa weather: Cold on the way in with another chance for snow this weekend
Our system that brought widespread totals of 2-4" of snow has continued to push out of the state, and with it exiting we're seeing cold air filtering in behind it. Highs will tumble from the low 20s Friday into the low teens by next week. Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts We'll stay dry for the next couple days and will likely see some decent sunshine to round out our week. Clouds filter back in Saturday afternoon and evening ahead of our next system that may bring a heaping helping of snow to mainly southern portions of the state starting late Saturday and lasting into Sunday evening. There are still some uncertainties with the exact track of the system and therefore snowfall amounts it may bring. An arctic high pressure moving in from Canada will be pushing down colder, drier air fighting the moisture-laden low pressure center driving in from the southwest. How much that system can overcome the dry air will have a large impact on how far north the heavy snow falls. The heaviest (6"+) looks to fall in northern Missouri, but if that system can fend off the area of high pressure and push further north, it'll take those higher totals into southern Iowa along with it. Over the next 24-48 hours we'll get a much better idea which situation will win out. What does this mean for the metro? As seems to be typical in situations like this we're right on the line of where that drier air may have its greatest impact, meaning we may see 2-3" of snow... or if the dry air wins out we may not see much out of this system. With that in mind, any northern shift would add more snow into the metro as well. Regardless of who sees the most snow, we're all going to be seeing a drastic cooldown as the arctic high pressure pushes down into the state. Overnight lows will drop into the single digits by Monday morning and stay there for much of next week. Highs will struggle to make it out of the teens. There are signs we may push out of this cold stretch by next weekend, but be ready to break out the big coats for at least a few days.Iowa weather forecastToday: Snow likely between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. 2 to 4 inches of snow expected.
