Iowa weather: Our first widespread severe storm potential of this season is on the way
GET OUT THERE AND CHECK OUT THOSE FLOWERS. HOWEVER, WE KNOW THAT THINGS WILL CHANGE AND THEY COULD START DOING SO HERE IN THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THAT’S RIGHT, WE ARE LOOKING AT A WEATHER ALERT DAY TOMORROW WITH SOME OF THE ACTION MOVING IN TONIGHT. JASON HAS ALL THE DETAILS FOR US. JASON IT COULD DEFINITELY BE A BUMPY DAY AND I MEAN EVEN FOR THE OVERNIGHT FOR SOME OF US, WE’RE GOING TO BE SEEING SOME OF THOSE STORMS MOVE IN. SO WE’LL GET TO DETAILS ON ALL OF THAT IN A SECOND. RIGHT NOW THOUGH, YOU CAN SEE IT’S QUIET OUT THERE. WE’VE GOT THE CLEAR SKIES OUT IN MARSHALLTOWN. LAMONI IS LOOKING GOOD AS TWO GOT SOME GREEN BUDS GOING THERE ON THE TREES AS WE WORK OUR WAY THROUGH SPRING HERE. BUT SITTING AT 81 DEGREES AGAIN, DEW POINTS ARE WAY DOWN THERE. WE HAVEN’T HAD THAT MOISTURE LIFT ITS WAY NORTH JUST YET, BUT ONCE WE DO, THAT WILL PROVIDE ENOUGH ENERGY AGAIN FOR SOME OF THESE STORMS. AS WE HEAD INTO THE OVERNIGHT AND WITH THE HEAT THAT WE’VE HAD NO SURPRISE THERE. 84 FOR CLARINDA RIGHT NOW, COUNCIL BLUFFS AT 82, WE HAVE GOT 70S TO LOW 80S ACROSS THE STATE RIGHT NOW. AVERAGES ARE IN THE LOW 60S, SO WE’RE WELL ABOVE THAT. YOU CAN SEE ACROSS THE STATE A LITTLE BIT OF CLOUD COVER JUST OFF TO THE SOUTH THERE PUSHING ITS WAY TO THE NORTH. BUT OUR SYSTEM HAS MADE FOR AN ACTIVE DAY WEST OF US IN PORTIONS OF NEBRASKA AS WELL AS SOUTH DAKOTA. THEY’VE GOT SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS UNDERWAY. TODAY IS THE DAY FOR THEM. FOR SOME OF THOSE STRONGER STORMS THAT ARE GOING TO BE PUSHING THROUGH. SO AS WE LOOK AT TOMORROW, THOUGH, WE ARE GOING TO START THESE STORMS REALLY EARLY ON, LIKELY GOING TO BE SEEING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS AS YOU WAKE UP. AND SOME OF THE STRONGER STORMS ARE GOING TO BE ROLLING THROUGH EARLY ON HERE AS WE HEAD THROUGH TEN, 11 AND EVEN NOON, WE’LL HAVE A LINE OF STORMS THAT’S GOING TO PUSH ITS WAY THROUGH. THAT’S GOING TO BRING IN THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS THAT LARGE HAIL COULD EVEN HAVE SOME EMBEDDED TORNADOES IN THERE, TOO. SO KEEP THAT IN MIND AS YOU WORK YOUR WAY THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY. LET’S TRACK IT OUT FOR YOU. HERE YOU CAN SEE THAT LINE CONTINUES TO SHOVE EASTWARD. AND AS IT I’M GOING TO GO BACK AND FORWARD ONE MORE TIME SO YOU CAN GET A CLOSER LOOK AT THAT. BUT WATCH THE INITIAL LINE. THAT LINE PUSHES THROUGH. HOW LONG THAT HANGS ON IS REALLY GOING TO DICTATE WHAT WE SEE INTO THE AFTERNOON, AS WE COULD SEE MORE SHOWERS MAKE THEIR WAY THROUGH KIND OF LIMIT THE THE INSTABILITY FOR US AND KIND OF MUTE THOSE AFTERNOON SEVERE STORMS. BUT I MORNING THAT MORNING LINE IS GOING TO BE WITH US NO MATTER WHAT. BUT NICE TO SEE RAIN AGAIN FOR US. NOT GOOD TO SEE IT WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR STORM DAMAGE, BUT 1 TO 2IN FAIRLY WIDESPREAD. COULD SEE SOME LOCATIONS OVER THREE INCHES. SO YOUR THREAT AREA FOR TONIGHT LARGELY OFF ON THAT WESTERN EDGE OF THE STATE. AND THE MAIN THREATS THAT WE’LL SEE TONIGHT AGAIN LIKELY TALKING LARGE HAIL AND THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME HEAVY RAINS COULD SEE SOME STRONG WINDS. BUT REALLY THE BULK OF IT IS GOING TO BE THAT LARGE HAIL IN THE HEAVY RAINS THAT WE’RE LOOKING AT. TORNADO THREAT OVERNIGHT IS VERY LOW, BUT WE GET INTO TOMORROW MORNING AND TOMORROW AFTERNOON THAT THREAT SHIFTS TO THE EAST AND WE WILL HAVE A JUICED UP ATMOSPHERE THAT WILL BE CAPABLE AGAIN OF TORNADIC ACTIVITY. LARGE HAIL AND THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS. SO AS WE LOOK AT YOUR NIGHT TONIGHT AGAIN, KNOW THAT SOME OF THESE STORMS OVERNIGHT COULD BRING IN SOME HAIL, BUT THE STRONGEST WILL BE YET TO COME. TEMPERATURES. NOT THAT COLD EITHER. WE’RE DROPPING OFF ONLY INTO THE UPPER 50S, AND WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT HIGHS TOMORROW IN THE MIDDLE 70S. SO WE LOOK AT YOUR EIGHT DAY FORECAST HERE AND YOU CAN SEE WE TAKE A PRETTY BIG DIP AFTER THIS. SO MAKE SURE YOU STAY WEATHER AWARE TOMORROW. WE DON’T ISSUE WEATHER ALERT DAYS VERY OFTEN. THE ONLY TIMES WE DO SO IS WHEN THERE’S POTENTIAL FOR LIFE THREATENING WEATHER. SO YOU SEE THAT LITTLE RED UPSIDE DOWN TRIANGLE. AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT THAT MEANS THAT IT’S GOING TO BE A BUMPY DAY. AFTER THAT, THINGS TAKE A LITTLE MORE TRANQUIL OF A TURN. WE’RE BACK DOWN INTO THE MIDDLE 50S.
