Iowa weather: Gusty winds return along with storm chances
After a quiet start to our workweek, our weather takes a windy and stormy turn.
Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts
An area of low pressure will approach the state Tuesday initially bringing in scattered showers throughout the day Tuesday with some potential for snowflakes mixing in through northwestern portions of the state late morning/early afternoon.
As the low continues its trek through the state it'll drag a cold front across Iowa with an accompanying line of showers and thunderstorms ahead of it late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Lacking rich surface moisture, most of these storms look to be elevated in nature.
We may see some strong storms but a more widespread severe weather threat looks to mainly stay south of the state. Our southern row of counties will have the highest likelihood of seeing any damaging wind or hail potential, much of which will be moving through between 10 pm until around 4 am Wednesday. Temperatures will push back into the mid-60s Wednesday with drier weather settling in behind the morning showers and storms.
Winds both Tuesday and Wednesday will likely gust to around 40mph. Winds taper down Thursday with temperatures dropping back into the mid-50s and staying there through the start of next week. The weekend looks mainly dry with low chances for precipitation Saturday as a significant system tracks south of the state.
