Iowa weather: Strong winds, storm chances and a much cooler Halloween
Today has been another day pulled from Summer with abnormal warmth for this time of year. By 3:30 p.m., we've already climbed to 83°, placing us as the second warmest Oct. 29 on record (warmest: 89°, 1937). The extremely windy conditions have helped drive us there and strong winds will likely stick around for the next couple days.

Tonight looks relatively quiet besides the winds with mild temperatures lingering. Lows will drop into the mid 60s, which could make for the warmest Oct. 30 morning on record (previous: 63°, 1901).
After our mild start, attention turns to the well-advertised cold front on its way that will march a line of storms across the state on Wednesday. Storms will be possible by late morning in western portions of the state and trek eastward to the metro around 3-4 p.m., reaching the eastern portion of the state in the evening.
This line will bring the potential for an occasional damaging wind gust, some hail, and an isolated tornado threat mainly through southern/southwestern portions of the state.

Regardless of who sees severe storms, much of the state will see heavy rain, lightning and winds up to around 35 mph. Rainfall amounts will be fairly widespread around 1-2" with the possibility of locally higher amounts where the stronger storms hit. Rain and storms will likely last for a few hours over any given location, though the bulk of the severe threat will exist on the leading edge of the line south of I-80 and west of I-35.
As the line shifts through temperatures will dramatically call back into the low to mid 40s by Thursday morning with highs Thursday only reaching into the low to mid 50s. With the winds staying strong it is going to feel like a pretty raw day, though we'll at least tap into some sunshine which should help.
Temperatures slowly warm from there back to around 60 by Saturday. More rain is likely this weekend with temperatures warming back into the mid-60s by Sunday and close to 70 on Monday.
We'll likely start the week off rainy on Monday with drier skies returning Tuesday as well as cooler temperatures topping out in the upper 50s.
