Crafting memories: 2nd graders do arts and crafts with residents at Iowa Veterans Home
vlog EIGHT NEWS AT SIX. A TRADITION IS BACK AT THE IOWA VETERANS HOME IN MARSHALLTOWN ON PAUSE. SINCE THE PANDEMIC. THESE YOUNG VISITORS ARE ONCE AGAIN WORKING WITH THE RESIDENTS TO CREATE SOME FUN ARTWORK AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, MEMORIES THAT CAN LAST DECADES. AND THEY’RE OFF THE BUS. A SINGLE FILE FOOT RACE TO SEE THEIR NEW FRIENDS. THEY COME. YAY! ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THEM AT THE FINISH LINE. THIS IS REALLY A HIGHLIGHT. WHEN THESE KIDS COME. MORE THAN 62ND GRADERS FROM NEARBY FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY CELEBRATING WHAT HAPPENED TO BE THE 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL. MY GRANNY NAME IS PATRICIA. ON WHAT’S BECOME ONE OF THEIR FAVORITE DAYS OF SCHOOL EVERY MONTH. THEY’LL ASK LIKE, WHEN’S THE NEXT TIME WE’RE GOING TO THE VETERANS HOME? AND SO THEY REALLY LIKE COMING TO DO CRAFTS. HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN HERE BEFORE TO DO THE CRAFTS WITH THE VETERANS? YES. THIS IS THE CRAFT THAT YOU ARE DOING. YOU LOOK LIKE YOU’RE VERY DIALED IN HERE. CAN I ASK WHAT YOU’RE WORKING ON? I DON’T KNOW. I’M MAKING ART PERSON. I’M WORKING ON CUTTING THE HEARTS. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A NEAT PICTURE WHEN WE’RE DONE. CRAIG THOMAS IS A VETERAN FROM INDEPENDENCE FOR SIX AND A OVERSEEING. MY FINGERS DON’T QUITE WORK RIGHT FOR IT. HE HAS 18 GRANDKIDS. THEY’RE ALL GROWN NOW. BUT WHEN THEY WERE YOUNGER WE HAD A LOT OF FUN LIKE THIS. SO IT’S KIND OF LIKE REMEMBERING A LITTLE BIT. IT GOES BOTH WAYS BECAUSE I GET TO HANG OUT WITH THEM AND IT MAKES ME REMEMBER MY GRANDMA THAT PASSED AWAY. IT’S PROBABLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS THAT WE DO. THIS WAS MATT MCALLISTER WHEN HE WAS A STUDENT AT FRANKLIN, AND I HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF COMING UP AND DOING THIS PROGRAM AS A KID. DECADES LATER, HE’S NOW AN ACTIVITY SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR AT THE HOME WHO HELPED BRING THIS BACK. SO THESE KIDS HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE. I’LL BE THE HIGHLIGHT FOR THE RESIDENTS HERE, AND I’M PRETTY SURE IT IS FOR THE KIDS. TURN IT THE OTHER WAY IF YOU WANT. TEAMWORK MAKES THE ART WORK. YOU KNOW, THE BEST IS SHADING FOR BLUE. FOR WHITE IS BLUE. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? SOME OF THIS? THE END RESULT. THIS WAS WHAT WE WERE MAKING FOR VALENTINE’S DAY. IT’S A LITTLE HEART WITH LITTLE HANDS. BEST PART WHEN YOU CAN WORK WITH THEM AND ENJOY THEIR COMPANY. IT’S PRETTY NEAT TO SEE THE IMPACT 30 MINUTES OF MOSTLY CONTROLLED CHAOS CAN HAVE. YOU LOVE OUR VETERANS HERE. YEAH. AND THAT THEY’LL BE BACK TO DO IT ALL AGAIN. NEXT MONTH. THAT LOOKS LIKE FUN. BUT YOU SAID CONTROLLED CHAOS. OH, YES. YEAH. YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE NEATEST PARTS, TOO, WAS A LOT OF THE VETERANS THAT THEY WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THIS, BUT ALSO THEY DIDN’T WANT TO TAKE AWAY FROM THEIR TIME TO SPEND WITH THE KIDS. THAT’S SO COOL. OH MY GOSH. AND YOU CAN JUST TELL HOW MUCH IT MEANT TO THEM AND THE KIDS TOO. I WAS REALLY SURPRISED BY THAT, THAT WERE THEY WERE PRESENT AND THEY WERE REALLY INTO NOT JUST DOING THE CRAFTS, BUT ALSO

"This is really a highlight when the kids come," veteran Bill Rader said.

More than 60-second graders from nearby Franklin Elementary in Marshalltown visit the Iowa Veterans Home just down the road on what's become one of their favorite days of school every month to do crafts.

"They'll ask when's the next time we're going to the Veterans Home? And so, they really like coming," teacher Jenni Serrano said.

Craig Thomas is a veteran from Independence.

"I'm kind of overseeing. My fingers don't work quite right for it," Thomas said.

He has 18 grandkids.

"They're all grown now, but when they were younger, we had a lot of fun like this. Kind of like remembering a little bit," Thomas said.

It goes both ways.

"My favorite part is hanging out with them, and it makes me remember my grandma that passed away," one of the students told vlog.

"It's probably one of my favorite things that we do," activity specialist Supervisor Matt McAllister said.

He was a student at Franklin.

"I have fond memories of coming up and doing this program as a kid," McAllister said.

Decades later, he helped bring this program back, so these kids have the same experience.

"It's probably a highlight for the residents here, and I'm pretty sure it is for the kids as well," McAllister said.

It's neat to see the impact 30 minutes of mostly controlled chaos can have.

"Do you love our veterans here?” vlog’s Ben Kaplan asked a group of the kids, who answered with a resounding, “YES!”

And that they'll be back to do it all again next month.
