'Thankful we didn't have more injuries': Pleasant Hill recovering from tornado
The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado on the ground in Pleasant Hill at about 9 p.m. Friday.
The central Iowa town sustained severe damage from the storm, including downed power lines, roofs torn off, trees snapped and uprooted, and blowing debris. As of 11 p.m. on Friday, more than 3,000 homes were reported to be without power, according to MidAmerican Energy.
Pleasant Hill Little League leaders posted a photo on Facebook Friday night showing downed powerlines at the entrance of Doanes Park. They also said Saturday's games are canceled.
During a news conference Saturday morning, Pleasant Hill Fire Chief Jamie Xayavong said one person was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Eighteen homes sustained severe damage with several others taking on moderate or minor damage.

Xayavong thanked first responders from the city and from surrounding communities for their assistance. Xayavong also noted the help neighbors were providing each other.
"That's one good thing about the city of Pleasant Hill," she said. "We all come together to help each other and you see a lot of people out there helping."
Polk County Supervisor Tom Hockensmith, who represents the people of Pleasant Hill, said he's ready to help neighbors as needed.
“This is the second time in two years this community has faced this kind of destruction. As a lifelong resident of Polk County, I am here to support my friends and neighbors and encourage them to reach out to me personally if I can be of assistance,” he said.
Pleasant Hill neighbor Brenda Pettiecord said she hasn't seen anything quite like the tornado.
An oak tree that had been in her backyard for over 20 years went through her roof.
"I was heartbroken. That was my favorite tree. And we had animals and birds and everything living in it," Pettiecord said. "Just was surreal. You never think it's going to happen to you."
Authorities did not know yet if school will be interrupted next week.
Xayavong said members of the community can for further updates.
Anyone in need of assistance or information can contact the county by calling 211.
