5 student-athletes charged in sports wagering investigation accept plea deals
NEWS IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. RIGHT NOW, FIVE COLLEGE ATHLETES IN OUR STATE AT THE CENTER OF A SWEEPING GAMBLING INVESTIGATION ARE TAKING A PLEA DEAL. vlog SPORTS DIRECTOR SCOTT ROYSTER TELLS US WHAT THAT MEANS FOR THEIR COLLEGIATE CAREERS. SCOTT. YEAH, I ALWAYS SAY FOOTBALL PLAYERS HUNTER DEKKERS, JAKE REMSBURG AND DODGE SASSER WILL ALL PLEAD GUILTY TO GAMBLING WHILE UNDER AGE. UNIVERSITY OF IOWA BASEBALL PLAYER GARRETT CHRISTIAN ISON AND FOOTBALL PLAYER AARON BLOM WILL TAKE THE SAME DEAL AS WELL. THEIR ATTORNEYS SAY THE FINE FOR UNDERAGE GAMBLING IS $645. THIS PLEA DEAL ALLOWS THESE PLAYERS TO AVOID THE MORE SERIOUS CHARGE OF TAMPERING WITH RECORDS WHICH COULD HAVE LED TO JAIL TIME. IN A STATEMENT SENT OUT THIS AFTERNOON, THEIR ATTORNEYS GO ON TO SAY THAT THE TRIO ARE NOT GUILTY OF DOING ANYTHING REGARDING THE TAMPERING WITH RECORDS. CHARGE. THE THREE IOWA STATE PLAYERS PLAN TO STILL PURSUE PLAYING THE SPORT THEY LOVE. IT’S THE NCAA S JOB TO HANDLE PENALTIES. AND WHAT WE DO KNOW SO FAR IS THAT DECKERS IS NOT ON THE TEAM THIS YEAR, REMSBURG IS SUSPENDED FOR SIX GAMES AND SAUCER HAS LEFT THE TEAM, AT LEAST THE LEGAL SIDE HAS BEEN RESOLVED FOR THESE THREE. AND FANS WE SPOKE TO SAY IT’S A WELCOME RELIEF. THAT’S GOOD NEWS FOR IOWA STATE. WE REALLY NEED THOSE PLAYERS BACK, EVEN IF EVEN IF THE NCAA DOESN’T BRING THEM BACK, WE’RE STILL GOING TO BE FIGHTING HARD FOR ALL OUR CONFIDENCE IS STILL THERE AND WE’RE STILL GOING TO BEAT IOWA. THERE’S NO OTHER SAY ABOUT IT. I THINK THAT’S FAIR CONSIDERING HE WASN’T GAMBLING ON IOWA STATE GAMES. I THINK IT’S FAIR THAT HE’S ONLY CHARGED FOR THE UNDERAGE GAMBLING CHARGE. AND I THINK HE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PLAY AGAIN AT SOME POINT.
