5 student-athletes charged in sports wagering investigation accept plea deals
Five current or former Iowa and Iowa State student-athletes facing charges in connection to a sports wagering investigation have accepted plea deals.
Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers, Iowa State offensive lineman Jake Remsburg and former Iowa State offensive lineman Dodge Sauser accepted plea deals Wednesday that resolved the criminal cases against them, according to a release from a lawyer for all three.
The release says the original charge of tampering with records was replaced with a guilty plea to underage gambling, which comes with a fine of $645.
"Other than the fact that Hunter, Jake, and Dodge placed some bets before they turned 21, nothing about those bets was a crime under Iowa law," the release states.
Sauser left the team in August amid the investigation. Dekkers is still listed on Iowa State's roster as of Wednesday, but he has not participated in team activities since fall camp began.
Remsburg returned to practice less than two weeks before the Cyclones' season opener vs. Northern Iowa. He did not participate in the game.
In Johnson County, Iowa kicker Aaron Blom and former Iowa baseball player Gehrig Christensen took plea deals, also with penalties up to $645.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Blom was not listed on Iowa's roster for the 2023 season.
