Bill to prohibit state agencies from funding DEI offices passes subcommittee
Iowa lawmakers are pushing ahead with a proposal that would prohibit state entities from funding diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
State entities would also have to stop hiring someone to serve as a DEI officer.
House Study Bill 155 passed through a subcommittee Tuesday. Many supporters say it will help save money, while others argue the bill is too broad.
"If I'm reading this bill correctly, it is extremely broad and goes across all levels of government. So that would include our departments at the state level, our social service agencies at the county level. And that means this is a huge, huge problem for social workers and for the clients that they serve," said Denise Randleman, of the National Association of Social Workers.
"Instead of focusing on merit and individual achievement, this legislation does not restrict free speech or academic inquiry. It simply ensures that public funds are not used to advance programs that prioritize identity politics over equal opportunity and merit," said Amber Williams, of Inspired Life.
House Study Bill 155 would not apply to a state entity already contracted with the federal government to fund a DEI program.
