Iowa lawmakers told to hold a date in July for special legislative session
Iowa lawmakers could return to the statehouse for a special legislative session in July.
Republican leadership has hinted they wanted to reconvene to address abortion laws, but a reason for the special session has not been announced.
An email sent by an Iowa lawmaker, obtained by vlog, directs state representatives to hold July 10 open for a special session.
No formal announcement has been made regarding the special session.
vlog has reached out to Republican House and Senate leaders for confirmation but has not heard back.
The governor's office says a decision hasn't been made to call the session.
vlog political analyst Dennis Goldford says if a special session is called, the topic should not be too surprising.
"The governor pretty well got just about everything she wanted in this past regular session in the spring," Goldford said. "It's fair to guess that the primary focus of a special session would be Iowa's regulation of abortion rights."
vlog did reach out to Democratic House and Senate leaders on Friday, too.
Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott tells vlog Democrats have been expecting something to happen.
"We have heard from the governor that there's the possibility of new legislation, a special session, a change to our State's constitution," said Trone Garriott.
