Iowa LB Jay Higgins leading the Hawkeye defense
Iowa's offense ranks as the worst in the nation, but the defense is one of the best. Senior linebacker Jay Higgins is a big reason why.
The Butkus Award semifinalist leads the Big Ten and ranks second nationally (the most by a Power 5 player) with 12.6 tackles per game. He has two 15+ and seven 10+ tackle games this season. Jackson has two 10+ tackle games this season and 22 for his career.
Higgins has 81 tackles in six Big Ten games, averaging 13.5 tackles per contest — 25 more than Northwestern’s Bryce Gallagher.
Higgins had 18 tackles at Penn State, tied for the sixth-most in a game this season and the most by a Hawkeye since Jack Campbell in 2021.
Iowa hosts Rutgers on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game is on BTN. Iowa is 4-2 in the Big Ten, leading the West Division by one game with three remaining. After Rutgers, Iowa hosts Illinois and travels to Nebraska to end the year.
