Iowa LB Jay Higgins leading the Hawkeye defense
POWERED BY CARL AUTO GROUP. HAWKEYES FIND THEMSELVES RANKED 22ND IN THE NEW COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS AND IN FIRST PLACE IN THE WEST. WITH THREE GAMES TO GO. RUTGERS IS COMING TO TOWN ON SATURDAY AS vlog SHANNON EARHART REPORTS. ONE LINEBACKER IN PARTICULAR WILL BE READY. IOWA IS FINDING A WAY TO WIN FOOTBALL GAMES AND IT’S THROUGH THEIR DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS. I’D SAY THAT’S PRETTY CLEAR TO ANY FAN WHO COMES TO WATCH HERE. WHAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW IS THAT MIDDLE LINEBACKER JAY HIGGINS IS HAVING A BREAKOUT SEASON. IF YOU DIDN’T LOOK AT THE STAT SHEET, LET ME FILL YOU IN. 113 TOTAL TACKLES, WHICH IS ACTUALLY 41 MORE THAN THE NEXT GUY, AND HE’S AVERAGING 12.6 A GAME THE MOST BY ANY POWER FIVE PLAYER. LAST YEAR HE TOTALED JUST 40 TACKLES. SO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY. PATIENCE PAYS. COACH WALLACE ALWAYS TOLD ME I WAS DOING GOOD. AND I MEAN, I UNDERSTOOD THE SITUATION WHEN I WAS IN. I MEAN, I DON’T I’M NOT TELLING THEM TO TAKE CAMPBELL OFF THE FIELD TO GIVE ME SOME REPS. I WAS JUST LOOKING DOWN THE ROAD. I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS YEAR. IT’S BEEN COOL TO SEE THINGS PLAY OUT. HE PAID ATTENTION TO GUYS LIKE CAMPBELL, BENSON AND HE’S JUST PLAYING SUCH A HIGH LEVEL AND HE’S BEEN BUMPED UP THERE DURING THE SEASON TOO. BUT JUST YOU CAN’T GET HIM OUT OF THERE. IT’S HARD TO GET HIM OUT OF PRACTICE. HIGGINS IS A SEMI FINALIST FOR THE -- BUTKUS AWARD. GIVEN TO THE MOST OUTSTANDING LINEBACKER. BUT HIGGINS KNOWS THAT ACTION SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. I MEAN, IT’S JUST IT’S ONE OF THOSE THINGS WHERE I DON’T WANT MY FOCUS TO BE THERE. AND I FEEL LIKE THAT THAT IS SEVERELY AFFECTED AFFECT MY PLAY. IF I’M MORE WORRIED ABOUT GAINING TACKLES THAN IT IS HELPING THE DEFENSE GET OFF THE FIELD. SO THE MORE I FOCUS ON HELPING THE TEAM GET THE GAMES COMES EASIER THAT WAY. FROM IOWA
