Kentucky's DeAndre Square intercepted Spencer Petras in the final minute, giving #22 Kentucky a wild 20-17 Citrus Bowl win over #15 Iowa Saturday in Orlando.
The Hawkeyes (10-4) had been driving down with a chance to tie the game or win it with a touchdown. Instead, the Hawkeyes were forced to watch Kentucky celebrate on the field at Camping World Stadium.
Kentucky struck first in the ballgame. QB Will Levis threw a short TD pass to Chris Rodriguez, Jr. to make it 7-0. It was the only TD the Iowa defense allowed the rest of the half.
The Hawkeyes, meanwhile, had a miserable first half on offense. They punted on their first two possessions, then settled for a Caleb Shudak field goal in the second quarter to cut Kentucky's lead to 7-3. Iowa was unable to score the rest of the half, and trailed 13-3 at the break.
In the second half, Iowa's defense continued to shine, and the offense picked things up. Late in the third quarter, Iowa faced a third and five from the Kentucky 20-yard-line. They handed the ball to freshman Arland Bruce IV on a reverse. The Ankeny grad raced to the endzone for the TD, cutting Kentucky's lead to 13-10.
After forcing Kentucky into a punt, the Hawkeye offense stayed hot. Petras found Sam LaPorta, who followed his blockers upfield for a 36-yard TD. The 92-yard drive gave the Hawkeyes their first lead of the game at 17-13.
Kentucky regained the lead with just under two minutes left. Rodriguez had a 6-yard TD to make it 20-17 Kentucky. Iowa had a nice drive going at the end before Square's interception sealed the win for Kentucky.
Petras finished 19/30 for 211 yards and 3 picks, one of which came on a hail mary to end the first half. Gavin Williams made his first start at running back and finished with a career-high 16 carries and 98 yards. Former Nebraska star Wan'Dale Robinson had 10 catches and 170 yards receiving for Kentucky.
LB Jack Campbell led Iowa with 14 tackles, tied for fourth most in Citrus Bowl history. Campbell had 143 tackles this season, the fifth-best single-season total in school history. The 143 tackles are the most by a Hawkeye since Pat Angerer had 145 in 2009. Campbell had five double-digit tackle performances (11, 18, 17, 16, 14) this season.
TE Sam LaPorta had a career-high 122 receiving yards and matched his career high with seven receptions.
Iowa had a season-high six sacks Saturday, including two by DL Zach VanValkenburg, who finished with eight tackles and 2.5 tackles-for-loss.
