Coronavirus hospitalizations continue to spike as the virus continues to spread in Iowa.The Iowa Department of Public Health on Thursday reported 4,337 new positive COVID-19 cases and 29 additional deaths. As of 10 a.m., the health department reported 170,358 total virus cases, 105,356 total recoveries and 1,927 total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. Twenty-four hours earlier, Iowa reported 166,021 total positive cases and 1,898 total deaths. This new data comes as the state’s TestIowa sites were closed Wednesday for Veterans Day.IDPH data shows 1,068,270 Iowans have been tested for coronavirus. The state received 9,410 lab test results in the previous day, with 2,752 positive cases. The health department receives test results from prior days that add to the overall total. Iowa now reports a statewide 14-day positivity rate of 22.1%, up from 21.4% a day earlier.Health department data shows 93 of Iowa’s 99 counties report a positivity rate 15% or higher over the last 14 days. Public schools in those counties can apply for a waiver to offer 100% online instruction. There are 67 counties with a 14-day positivity rate greater than 20%. Seven counties are at 30% or higher, while Wayne County reports a 40.2% average and Jones County shows a 48.2% average.A record 1,208 Iowans are hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 1,190 reported a day earlier. There are 215 patients in intensive care, also a record. There were 212 patients in ICU the previous day. There were 207 patients admitted in the last 24 hours, down from 240 the previous day.
