vlog EIGHT NEWS AT 530. THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF THE BLIND IS CELEBRATING A SPECIAL MILESTONE THIS WEEK. NEW AT 530. vlog’S NICOLE TAM HIGHLIGHTS HOW THE AGENCY HAS BEEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR BLIND AND LOW VISION IOWANS FOR 100 YEARS. CONNIE MENDENHALL WAS A STUDENT AT THE DEPARTMENT FOR THE BLIND WHEN SHE LOST HER SIGHT TEN YEARS AGO. WITH THE TRAINING THAT YOU CAN RECEIVE FROM THE IOWA DEPARTMENT FOR THE BLIND, YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE, BE ANYTHING, ACHIEVE ANY JOB, WHATEVER YOUR GOAL IS. THE AGENCY OFFERS MANY RESOURCES. THERE’S ALSO A LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND AND PRINT DISABLED. PROVIDE THE NON-VISUAL SKILL TRAINING THAT A BLIND OR LOW LOW VISION INDIVIDUAL NEEDS TO LIVE AN EMPOWERED, CONFIDENT, INDEPENDENT LIFE. TO REACH WHATEVER GOALS THEY SET FOR THEMSELVES. WITH TECHNOLOGY COMBINED WITH SKILLS. RIGHT NOW I’M CHECKING MY CALENDAR. SHE’S SERVING AS THE ORGANIZATION’S CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER. I AM PROOF POSITIVE THAT THE VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM WORKS. PART OF LEARNING WITHOUT SIGHT IS THE POWER OF BRAILLE. THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGE YOU CAN GIVE SOMEBODY WHO IS BLIND OR LOW VISION IS GETTING THAT BRAILLE IN THEIR HANDS SO THAT THEY ARE LITERATE. THE LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND IS THAT PLACE FILLED WITH INFORMATION AND STORIES, ALL IN BRAILLE. THE DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 1925. IT MOVED INTO THE FORMER YMCA BUILDING. AS YOU SEE RIGHT HERE ON THE LEFT. THAT’S ON FOURTH STREET IN DES MOINES IN 1960. AND YOU CAN SEE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS THE CARS ON THE ROAD CHANGE OVER TIME. BUT THE DEPARTMENT’S MISSION WILL BE THE SAME FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS. THAT IS EMPOWERING BLIND IOWANS TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY. WELL, THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OPENING HOUSE IS HAPPENING WEDNESDAY FROM THREE UNTIL 6

The agency has been making a difference for Iowans with blindness or low vision for 100 years.Connie Mendenhall was a student at the department when she lost her sight 10 years ago."With the training that you can receive from the Iowa Department for the Blind, you can go anywhere, be anything, achieve any job, whatever your goal is," Mendenhall said. The agency offers many resources, including a library for blind and print disabled people. "Provide the nonvisual skill training that a blind or low-vision individual needs to live an empowered, confident, independent life to reach whatever goals they set for themselves," Mendenhall said. With technology combined with skills, she's serving as the organization's chief information officer."I am proof positive that the vocational rehabilitation program works," Mendenhall said. "The biggest advantage you can give somebody who is blind or low vision is getting that Braille in their hands so that they are literate." The centennial celebration open house is happening Wednesday, April 2 from 3 to 6 p.m. at 524 Fourth St. in Des Moines.
