The derecho Iowa experienced Wednesday has been named the first derecho recorded in the country during the month of December. The National Weather Service said the derecho produced at least 21 tornadoes, of which 12 were EF2. The winds got up to 120 mph in some parts of the state. At least five people died across Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. One of which was in eastern Iowa where a semitrailer rolled after being struck by high winds. Iowa State Patrol confirmed the driver was killed during the incident. Reports confirm more than 400,000 homes were without power between Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Kansas. Officials are still surveying the damage, but many in the state reported damage in Greene, Webster and Floyd counties. Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for residents in 43 counties. Allamakee, Appanoose, Audubon, Bremer, Buena Vista, Butler, Calhoun, Cass, Cerro Gordo, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Davis, Emmet, Franklin, Fayette, Floyd, Greene, Guthrie, Humboldt, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Harrison, Howard, Ida, Kossuth, Lucas, Madison, Marshall, Mills, Mitchell, Monroe, Montgomery, O'Brien, Palo Alto, Page, Pottawattamie, Pocahontas, Ringgold, Sac, Shelby, Union, Woodbury, Washington, Webster, Winnebago, Winneshiek, Wright and Worth counties are included.Multiple schools around central Iowa canceled or delayed classes due to communitywide power outages or downed power lines.
