'Be patient with us': I-80/35 ramp closures begin Monday night, last until August
Starting Monday night, the southbound entrance ramp to Interstate 80/35 at Hickman Road and the southbound exit ramp to University Avenue will be closed for approximately four months as part of a $94 million construction project.
These closures are expected to impact around 20,000 vehicles that use these ramps daily.
"I think it'll be interesting, just because this is the busiest area. It will definitely affect me and my routes and stuff I have to do locally here," said Mark Rech, a truck driver who passes through the area for work and lives nearby.
This construction marks the beginning of a larger series of projects planned along the stretch between Hickman and the Southwest Connector.
If construction proceeds without delays, the Iowa Department of Transportation expects the ramps to reopen by Aug. 19. Engineers associated with the project acknowledged the inconvenience to drivers but emphasized that they and contractors are working as quickly as possible to minimize disruption.
With some 53,000 vehicles traveling this stretch of Hickman Road, many drivers are bracing for the detours.
One motorist, however, emphasized their determination to access a nearby gas station known for offering the least expensive fuel on their route.
"If those on-ramps and off-ramps are off, then I'd probably take the exit before and take all the side roads," said Jackson Tennis.
Officials are asking for patience as construction progresses, emphasizing the long-term benefits of the improvements once the project is complete.
While the temporary inconvenience will challenge commuters, the enhancements aim to improve the overall infrastructure and travel experience for the heavy traffic in the area.
