When you watch a Drake softball game, you won't just see Bulldog blue. If you look closely, you'll see all the players' shoelaces are green. There's a reason.
"Green thoughts are good thoughts," said senior Heidi Wheeler, a Waukee grad. "So, when our new coach came in, she preached if you're wearing green, you're thinking green thoughts. You don't let those negative thoughts before a big play get in your head. Green thoughts are good thoughts."
"If you need a second to take away any stress of the game, just look down at your cleats," said freshman Ava Curry.
With a month left in the season, Drake is 14-23. Half of their losses are only by one run. They are so close to turning things around.
"I don't think our record reflects how well this season has been going of how much better we've gotten and how much we trust each other," Wheeler said.
Head coach Lindsay Diehl and her staff made growth the focus this season.
"I'm really taken aback how much it has helped me," Curry said. "The coaching staff has really bought into it."
For them, growth is green.
"We all have that mental reminder," Wheeler said. "We can tell each other, 'Hey green thoughts are good thoughts.'"
In case they forget to tell each other, they have a reminder on their feet.
