'Big Citrus': Iowa State defensive anchor Domonique Orange plays at 325 pounds after topping 400 in high school
THEY HAVE A NAME FOR HIM BIG CITRUS. DOMINIQUE. ORANGE IS BIG, 325 POUNDS, BUT BIG CITRUS USED TO BE BIGGER. I WEIGHED 400 POUNDS. I WAS BIG, YEAH, A LOT BIGGER. MY HIGHEST I EVER GOT TO IN HIGH SCHOOL. MY SENIOR YEAR WAS LIKE 408 POUNDS TO UNDERSTAND HOW IT GOT TO THAT POINT, YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO DOMINIQUE’S FRESHMAN YEAR AS A HIGH SCHOOLER IN KANSAS CITY. IOWA STATE COACHES HAD MET HIM, LOVED HIS TALENT, BUT WORRIED ABOUT A NINTH GRADER WHO WAS ALREADY 300 POUNDS. REMEMBER THAT AS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL? AND ONE THING WE TOLD HIM WHEN WE OFFERED HIM IS THAT YOU GOT TO WATCH YOUR WEIGHT. YOU HAVE TO WATCH YOUR WEIGHT. HE WAS ABOUT 300 POUNDS AS A TRUE FRESHMAN, AND IT GOT HIM. IT DID COVID HAPPENED AND IT SET BACK. COBURG WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE THAT COVID REALLY HIT. YOU KNOW, I GOT TO THE POINT WHERE I WAS JUST EATING, EATING FOR FUN. SO I GOT UP TO 400 POUNDS IN HIGH SCHOOL. OVER THE YEARS, HIS WEIGHT WENT UP AND THE NUMBER OF OFFERS WENT DOWN. YOU KNOW, I HAD TOP TEN TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY KNOCKING AT MY DOOR. BUT YOU KNOW, WHEN THEY FOUND OUT I HAD, I HAD GOT TO 400 POUNDS, YOU KNOW, I LOST THOSE. BUT YOU KNOW, I’M VERY GRATEFUL TO BE HERE, HONESTLY. THE NORTH KANSAS CITY HIGH STAR SIGNED WITH IOWA STATE AND THEN GOT TO WORK. I TALKED TO COACH CAMPBELL WHEN I GOT HERE. YOU KNOW, A BIG EMPHASIS FOR ME TRYING TO GET ON THE FIELD. SO, YOU KNOW, HE WORKED WITH ME. HE UNDERSTOOD THAT I HAD THE ABILITY. IT’S JUST WE LOST WEIGHT WHEN I GOT HERE. BUYING IN FACTOR HAS GOT TO BE FROM YOU. YOU CAN DO EVERY RIGHT. EVERYTHING RIGHT AT THIS FACILITY. RIGHT. AND THEN GO HOME AND EAT 13 PIZZAS AND RUIN IT AND START BACK OVER. SO HE HAD TO COMMIT TO THAT FULL TIME AND THAT’S WHAT HE DID. HE’S NOW A 325 POUND JUNIOR AND AN EMERGING STAR ON THE CYCLONES DEFENSIVE LINE, DID SOME AGILITY THAT YOU JUST DON’T SEE WHAT A GUY IS FRAMED. AND ALL THAT HARD WORK IS PAYING OFF. I’M PRETTY PROUD OF THAT. YEAH, ABSOLUTELY. FOR ME TO GO FOR UNDER POUNDS 325, IT’S A BLESSING. THE CONFIDENCE HE HAS IN HIMSELF TO TO LET LOOSE WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN HIM, THE ABILITY TO DO AND BELIEVE TH

He had to commit to that full-time, and that's what he did."All that hard work is paying off. Nicknamed "Big Citrus" he is now a 325-pound junior and an emerging star on the Cyclones defensive line."He's got agility you just don't see with a guy his frame," Rasheed said."For me to go from 400 pounds to 325, that's a blessing," Orange said.
