STEVE: THIS NEW YORK TIMES RANKING COMES AS THE STATE SET NEW RECORDS FOR THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE HOSPITAL WITH THE VIRUS AND THE NUMBER OF LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES REPORTING OUTBREAKS. MORE THAN 1100 IOWANS ARE BEING TREATED FOR COVID-19 IN IOWA HOSPITALS RIGHT NOW. THIS IS THE 16TH CONSECUTIVE DAY THAT THE STATE HAS SET A NEW RECORD FOR HOSPITALIZATIONS. STACEY: MEANTIME, THE STATE SURPASSED 100 OUTBREAKS AMONG ITS LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES. THERE ARE NOW 101 OUTBREAKS, ACCOUNTING FOR MORE THAN 3,000 CASES. IN RESPONSE, GOVERNOR REYNOLDS ANNOUNCED NEW PUBLIC HEALTH MEASURES THIS MORNING. TODD THE GOVERNOR ADMITS TODAY THAT THINGS ARE NOT GOING WELL IN THE STATE OF IOWA WHEN IT COMES TO COVID-19. SHE HAS NOT YET DECIDED TO CLOSE ANYMORE BUSINESSES, BUT SHE SAYS I WINS HAVE TO WORK A LOT HARDER TO HELP STOP THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. SHE SAYS IF IT CONTINUES, IT COULD BECOME A VERYALARMING SITUATION. >> THE VIRUS IS SPREADING EASILY BETWEEN PEOPLE AS THEY GATHER IN GROUPS OR GO ABOUT THEIR NORMAL ACTIVITIES, ESPECIALLY WHEN PREVENTATIVE HEALTH MEASUR LIKE MASKING AND SOCIAL DISTANCING ARE NOT BEING FOLLOWED. TODD GOVERNOR REYNOLDS HAS : DECIDED THE ONLY WAY TO SLOW DOWN COVID 19 SPREAD IS TO REQUIRE MORE MASK WEARING AT PUBLIC EVENTS. A NEW PROCLAMATION DECLARES THAT ANY SOCIAL, COMMUNITY, RECREATIONAL, LEISURE OR SPORTING GATHERING WITH MORE THAN 25 PEOPLE INDOORS OR 100 PEOPLE OUTDOORS WILL BE PROHIBITED UNLESS ALL PEOPLE OVER THE AGE OF 2 WEAR MASKS. ALSO, GROUPS OF PEOPLE ATTENDING EVENTS CAN BE NO LARGER THAN 8 PEOPLE. HOUSEHOLDS LARGER THAN 8 ARE EXCLUDED. TODD: THERE’S ANOTHER PART OF THE PROCLAMATION THAT INCLUDES SALONS, BARBERSHOPS, MASSAGE THERAPY ESTABLISHMENTS, TATTOO ESTABLISHMENTS, AND TANNIN FACILITIES, ALL CUSTOMER STILL MUST BE SIX FEET APART AT THOSE PLACES AND EVERYONE HAS TO WEAR A MASK. THE NEW MASK MANDATE GOES INTO EFFECT TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT A WILL LAST FOR THE NEXT 30 DAY IF YOU DEFY THE NEW RULES, YOU ARE SUBJECT TO A FINE AND THAT COULD BE A MISDEMEANOR. THE HIGH VOLUME OF COVID-19 PATIENTS IN IOWA HOSPITALS RIG NOW MEANS HOSPITALS MUST TURN AWAY PATIENTS WITH LESS SERIOUS ILLNESSES. WHILE HOSPITALS ARE NOT RUNNING OUT OF BEDS, THEY ARE RUNNING OUT OF STAFF. THE GOVERNOR IS ASKING IOWANS TO CUT BACK ON SOCIAL GATHERINGS AND WEAR A MASK TO HELP FIGHT THE SURGE. Kim Reynolds announced new public health measures Tuesday on the heels of Iowa’s 16th consecutive COVID-19 hospitalization record.The Iowa Department of Public Health reported Tuesday that more than 1,100 Iowans are hospitalized for COVID-19.The state also surpassed 100 outbreaks among long-term care facilities. During her COVID-19 news conference, Reynolds announced a proclamation requiring more mask wearing in public. Effective midnight Tuesday, any social, community, recreational, leisure or sporting gathering with more than 25 people indoors or 100 people outdoors will be prohibited unless all people over the age of 2 wear masks. Groups of event attendees cannot exceed eight people. Households larger than eight are excluded. Events of more than 10 people must ensure 6 feet of social distancing between groups. “The virus is spreading easily between people as they gather in groups or go about their normal activities, especially when preventative health measures like masking and social distancing are not being followed,” Reynolds said.For youth and high school sporting events, all spectators over two must wear masks and keep 6 feet apart if more than 25 people attend an indoor event.Only two spectators will be allowed for each youth athlete. Athletes are not required to wear masks. Reynolds said she does not want to shut down businesses and is instead asking Iowans to do more to help stop COVID-19 spread. “I'm here to tell Iowans I need your help,” she said. “If you want to keep our businesses open and you want to keep our kids in school, if you want to make sure that we have hospitals and long-term care facilities and we have clinics that can treat not only COVID, but other individuals that have serious health conditions, then we all have to buckle down and take this serious.”Reynolds’ latest proclamation requires salons, barbershops, massage therapy establishments, tattoo establishments and tanning facilities to keep customers 6 feet apart.
