Gov. Reynolds enacts mitigation efforts amid COVID-19 surge
Gov. Kim Reynolds announced new public health measures Tuesday on the heels of Iowa’s 16th consecutive COVID-19 hospitalization record.
The Iowa Department of Public Health reported Tuesday that more than 1,100 Iowans are hospitalized for COVID-19.
The state also surpassed 100 outbreaks among long-term care facilities.
During her COVID-19 news conference, Reynolds announced a proclamation requiring more mask wearing in public.
Effective midnight Tuesday, any social, community, recreational, leisure or sporting gathering with more than 25 people indoors or 100 people outdoors will be prohibited unless all people over the age of 2 wear masks.
Groups of event attendees cannot exceed eight people. Households larger than eight are excluded.
Events of more than 10 people must ensure 6 feet of social distancing between groups.
“The virus is spreading easily between people as they gather in groups or go about their normal activities, especially when preventative health measures like masking and social distancing are not being followed,” Reynolds said.
For youth and high school sporting events, all spectators over two must wear masks and keep 6 feet apart if more than 25 people attend an indoor event.
Only two spectators will be allowed for each youth athlete. Athletes are not required to wear masks.
Reynolds said she does not want to shut down businesses and is instead asking Iowans to do more to help stop COVID-19 spread.
“I'm here to tell Iowans I need your help,” she said. “If you want to keep our businesses open and you want to keep our kids in school, if you want to make sure that we have hospitals and long-term care facilities and we have clinics that can treat not only COVID, but other individuals that have serious health conditions, then we all have to buckle down and take this serious.”
Reynolds’ latest proclamation requires salons, barbershops, massage therapy establishments, tattoo establishments and tanning facilities to keep customers 6 feet apart. Masks are also required at those facilities.
The mask mandate will remain effect for 30 days. Anyone who defies the new rules could face a misdemeanor charge.
