Naomi Watts officially cast in 'Game of Thrones' prequel

Here's everything we know so far

Naomi Watts has been confirmed as the lead in HBO’s upcoming "Game of Thrones" prequel pilot. The show – which has been penned by author George R. R. Martin and screenwriter Jane Goldman – is set thousands of years before the events that we’ve already witnessed on screen. What we know so far is that Watts' character is a “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret” and that the plot will be delving into how the world fell into darkness after the decline of the Age Of Heroes. HBO issued a statement about the unnamed drama, saying: "Only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it's not the story we think we know."Speaking to Deadline, a programming president hinted that Watts won’t be the only strong female lead in the series: “There are very strong female characters but it's an ensemble, there are men and women. Jane is a very good writer; we don't want to limit her to writing female leads. There are a lot of very complicated leads in (the pilot).""Game of Thrones," which aired for the first time in 2011, is scheduled to end with its eighth season in 2019. Star Sophie Turner previously said of its conclusion: “Who knows if it will be satisfying for the fans? I think a lot of fans will be disappointed and a lot of fans will be over the moon.”
