That sound you just heard was the internet breaking. Two of the most groundbreaking and culturally significant franchises of our time are joining forces, as Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss just signed on to write a new series of Star Wars movies.Per a Disney press release, the new series will be separate from the new trilogy currently being developed by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. It will also stand apart from The Skywalker Saga, the official name for the trilogy comprised of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and J.J. Abrams' upcoming, as-yet-untitled Episode IX. “In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in a statement. “Their command of complex characters, depth of storm and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”The next Star Wars movie due for release is Solo: A Star Wars Story, focusing on a younger version of Harrison Ford's iconic character, played by Alden Ehrenreich. It's out May 25, with Episode IX due a year later in May of 2019. The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will premiere in April of 2019.
