'What Memorial Day is all about': Visitors flock to Iowa's Freedom Rock on Memorial Day
The artist behind Iowa's iconic Freedom Rock in Adair County was there Monday to meet some of the people who visited the 60-ton boulder to pay their respects on Memorial Day.
It's the 25th straight year that Ray "Bubba" Sorensen has painted a military-themed mural on the massive rock at 2301-2319 120th St. — southwest of Menlo — and it's become a must-see for many on Memorial Day.
This year's mural honored Medal of Honor recipients, and, as always, there's a little more than just paint in his art. Sorensen mixes the ashes of fallen veterans into his paint and every Memorial Day, he paints the ashes onto the rock.
"It just turns this into a true memorial," he said. "This is like a grave site ... sacred ground because we have the ashes of over 130 Vietnam veterans already painted into the helicopter."
Sorensen, a state representative out of Greenfield, says all the effort is worth it because "they're remembering."
"I've trudged up some stories from the past, and those guys are getting remembered for what they've done," he said. "And that's what Memorial Day is all about."
