'What Memorial Day is all about': Visitors flock to Iowa's Freedom Rock on Memorial Day
RESOURCES FOR OTHER THINGS. WELL, THE ARTIST BEHIND THE FREEDOM ROCK PAINTED IT FOR THE 25TH STRAIGHT YEAR. TODAY IN GREENFIELD THIS AFTERNOON. SO WAS vlog ETHAN HUMBLE TO GIVE YOU A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT THE NEWLY PAINTED FREEDOM ROCK. THIS IS A SPECIAL THEME THIS YEAR. ETHAN YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT. JAMES WITH THE THEME OF HONORING VETERANS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN SERVICE, THE FREEDOM ROCK DREW LARGE CROWDS. THIS MEMORIAL DAY, IT’S A LOT MORE THAN JUST A ROCK. IT’S A GOOD PAINTING. AND I COME BACK EVERY YEAR. HE’S JUST THE GREATEST THAT WE’VE BEEN HERE ON MEMORIAL DAY FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. THE ORIGINAL FREEDOM ROCK IN GREENFIELD HAS BECOME A MUST VISIT ON MEMORIAL DAY. RAY BUBBA SORENSEN PAINTS THE ROCK EVERY YEAR TO HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN IN SERVICE. THE FACT THAT PEOPLE ARE COMING OUT HERE MEANS THAT THEY’RE REMEMBERING THEIR YOU KNOW, I’VE TRUDGED UP SOME STORIES FROM PAST AND AND THOSE GUYS ARE GETTING REMEMBERED FOR WHAT THEY’VE DONE. AND AND THAT’S WHAT MEMORIAL DAY IS ALL ABOUT. SORENSEN MIXES THE ASHES OF FALLEN VETERANS INTO HIS PAINT. AND EVERY MEMORIAL DAY, HE PAINTS THE ASHES ONTO THE ROCK. FOR ME, IT JUST TURNS THIS INTO A TRUE MEMORIAL. THIS IS LIKE A GRAVESITE FOR ME AND YOU KNOW, FOR ALSO FOR ME AND FOR OTHERS, I THINK SACRED GROUND BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE THE ASHES OF OVER 130 VIETNAM VETERANS ALREADY PAINTED INTO THE HELICOPTER. BUT SORENSEN’S TALENTS EXPAND FAR BEYOND GREENFIELD. THERE IS NOW A ROCK PAINTED IN EACH OF IOWA’S 99 COUNTIES. ONE COUPLE SAYS THE PANDEMIC ENCOURAGED THEM TO VISIT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM. WE WERE BOTH WORKING FROM HOME AND NEEDED TO GET OUT ON THE WEEKENDS AND CASS WAS UNDER $2 A GALLON. AND SO IT WAS TIME TO HIT THE ROAD FOR THE WEEKEND. A MISSION THEY SAID WAS MORE THAN WORTH IT. SORENSEN’S PAINTINGS CAN ALSO BE SEEN IN NINE DIFFERENT STATES, BRINGING THE MEANING OF THE HOLIDAY TO ALL GENERATIONS. CARNES. HE GOES AND TALKS TO THE TROOPS. HE’S BEEN TO AFGHANISTAN AND AND EVERYTHING AND JUST ENCOURAGING THE KIDS TO GO ON AND DO WHAT THEIR DREAM IS. IF YOU CAN PROVIDE FOR IOWA, YOU CAN PROVIDE FOR A LOT OF STATES AND SERVICES. AND THAT’S JUST THE BEST YOU CAN DO IN GREENFIELD. ETHA

The artist behind Iowa's iconic Freedom Rock in Adair County was there Monday to meet some of the people who visited the 60-ton boulder to pay their respects on Memorial Day. It's the 25th straight year that Ray "Bubba" Sorensen has painted a military-themed mural on the massive rock at 2301-2319 120th St. — southwest of Menlo — and it's become a must-see for many on Memorial Day. This year's mural honored Medal of Honor recipients, and, as always, there's a little more than just paint in his art. "This is like a grave site ... sacred ground because we have the ashes of over 130 Vietnam veterans already painted into the helicopter."Sorensen, a state representative out of Greenfield, says all the effort is worth it because "they're remembering."
