Millions of doughnuts recalled over potential listeria contamination
Be cautious with your favorite pastries this week.On Feb. 5, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of approximately 2 million baked goods due to "potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes." The recall, initiated on Jan. 7 and escalated to a Class II status on Feb. 5, involves products manufactured by FGF Brands, an Indiana-based pastry wholesaler. Some of the affected items are sold at Dunkin' locations.Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious foodborne illnesses. Symptoms include vomiting, muscle aches and fever, and the infection poses the highest risk to pregnant women, newborns, elderly adults and individuals with weakened immune systems. The U.S. Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) estimates that annually, 1,600 Americans contract listeria infections, resulting in approximately 260 deaths.This recall follows similar incidents in 2024, including those involving broccoli and Boar's Head meat products, both due to potential listeria contamination. Public concern over food recalls remains high, with 81% of survey respondents expressing worry and 16% avoiding certain products.Consumers are advised to check for recalled products and follow FDA guidance to prevent potential health risks.
