In an effort to find more areas to cut government waste, Elon Musk is shifting attention for the Department of Government Efficiency by targeting entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.
In an interview earlier this week, Musk identified the programs, which make up a majority of federal spending, as "the big one to eliminate."
"We're going to be very careful with any interruption to benefits," Musk said. "In fact, only by tackling the waste and fraud in entitlements like Social Security, Medicare, can we actually preserve those programs for the future."
Musk and defenders like President Donald Trump have characterized much of the Department of Government Efficiency's work as targeting costly waste and fraud.
Fraud is illegal, but the Justice Department has so far not brought large-scale criminal cases connected to the crimes the Department of Government Efficiency is alleging.
President Trump added that the Department of Government Efficiency now expects to cut $1 trillion in federal spending, half of what was originally predicted. The department says it has already cut tens of billions in federal spending, but fact-checkers have found the number to be much less than that.
Democrats say waste is shorthand for getting rid of programs the Trump administration disagrees with.
