Ophelie? Stacey, Ben... Police say 15- year-old Jovahn Mathis was a resident HERE at Ellipsis, which provides residential and educational help for at-risk youth and families. He's now charged with second- degree murder of a woman who worked here. <CLIP 9815 TIME 16:25:11 "IT'S SAD AND IT'S UNUSUAL."> Fifteen-year-old Jovahn Mathis is currently in the custody of Iowa's Juvenile Court. Mathis is charged with second degree murder. Johnston Police say they were called to Ellipsis on May 8th and were told Mathis had run away from campus and had a history of being violent. Kathleen Galloway-Menke and a male colleague followed him, which Ellipsis says is its policy. <CLIP 9815 TIME 16:23:24 " OUR INVESTIGATION HAS CONCLUDED THAT ON MAY 8TH, 2024, THE DEFENDANT, WITH MALICE AFORETHOUGHT, ASSAULTED MISS GALLOWAY MONKEY INTENTIONALLY AND FORCEFULLY, PUSHING HER WITH ARMS AND HANDS, CAUSING HER TO BECOME AIRBORNE AND STRIKE HER HEAD ON THE CONCRETE."> Galloway-Menke passed away from a severe head injury on May 14. Chief Dennis McDaniel says Mathis made threatening comments towards Galloway-Menke prior to and on the day of the assault. McDaniel also says police had several prior interactions with Mathis. 糖心vlog spoke to a woman who says she has a grandson at Ellipsis. <CLIP 9814 TIME 15:48:25 "I WAS SHOCKED. I WAS SHOCKED."> She wished to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation against her grandson. The woman tells 糖心vlog she believes Ellipsis is understaffed. <CLIP 9814 TIME 15:49:26 "WITH THESE KIDS HAVING THE ISSUES THAT THEY HAVE, I, I, I THINK IT SHOULD BE BETTER STAFF, MORE, YOU KNOW, WITH MORE PEOPLE."> The woman says Ellipsis hasn't sent out anything about the incident. She says she is constantly worried about her grandson. <CLIP 9814 TIME 15:50:42 " I CAN'T SAY THAT IT'S ALL TOTALLY DUE TO ELLIPSIS, BUT THEY DO CONTRIBUTE. IT MAKES ME NERVOUS. YES."> Johnston Police say it's taken some time to work through the tragic case. But they appreciate the public's patience throughout the investigation. <CLIP 9815 TIME 16:26:40 "OUR GOAL IS TO SEEK THE PROSECUTION AND TRY TO HOLD THIS INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS."> I did ask Johnston Police if this case will be moved out of juvenile court. The chief tells me it's their understanding that the Polk County Attorney's Office is considering that move. Police say the 15-year-old resident of a Johnston, Iowa, juvenile treatment center charged in connection to a staffer's death made threats to the staffer in the days prior and on the day of the assault.Jovahn Mathis, 15, faces second-degree murder charges after the deadly assault of 50-year-old Kathleen Galloway-Menke, according to a news release from the city of Johnston. Mathis allegedly shoved her outside Ellipsis Iowa in Johnston, causing severe brain damage when she fell and hit her head on May 8. Galloway-Menke died of her injuries on May 14.Johnston police said they were called to Ellipsis just before 7 p.m. on May 8. Police said they were told Mathis had run away from campus and had a history of being violent. Officers who responded to the scene were hit, bitten and scraped by Mathis, according to police. Police said they had multiple interactions with Mathis prior to the assault. Chief Dennis McDaniel said Mathis started living at Ellipsis in January.McDaniel said Mathis made threatening comments towards Galloway-Menke prior to and on the day of the assault."Our investigation has concluded that on May 8, 2024, the defendant with malice aforethought assaulted Miss Galloway-Menke and forcefully pushing her with arms and hands, causing her to become airborne and strike her head on the concrete," McDaniel said. Mathis is currently in the custody of Iowa's Juvenile Court. McDaniel said it is his understanding that the Polk County Attorney's Office is considering moving the case out of juvenile court. 糖心vlog also spoke with the grandmother of another resident at Ellipsis.
