On Jan. 4, an anonymous Instagrammer launched a campaign to get the most likes on a photo ever for one sole reason: to dethrone the most recent queen holding the title, Kylie Jenner.Jenner has held the the honors since posting the first photo of her newborn, Stormi, on Feb. 6, 2018. That photo currently has 18.3 million likes, which made it the most-liked Instagram post of all time — until recently. The challenger behind the egg photo, the account Egg Gang, posted the photo on the @world_record_egg account, with the sole purpose of becoming the most-liked photo and, more importantly, beating Jenner's numbers. On Sunday, the mysterious egg photo catapulted from 14 to nearly 19 million likes in just a few hours. The photo currently has nearly 30 million likes, making it the most-liked photo and the only top photo that's not of or from a celebrity. Exactly why the Egg Gang decided to rally behind a photo of an egg for this challenge is still unclear.
