Editorial: Celebrating the greatness of Caitlin Clark
Caitlin Clark did it! On Thursday she became the new NCAA women’s basketball scoring leader. Breaking Kelsey Plum’s all-time scoring record. Congratulations, Caitlin. With four more regular season games, and postseason play, Clark will continue to add to her mark. Meaning, she could overtake Kansas’ Lynette Woodard who scored 3,649 points in her college career. A career that pre-dated NCAA sponsorship of women’s sports. She may even surpass Pete Maravich as the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history – period. Men and women combined. That would be phenomenal.Clark’s prolific shooting, and dynamic on-court presence is doing more than shaking up the record books, it’s revolutionizing the game. This season, in addition to playing in front of sell-out crowds at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Caitlin Clark is singlehandedly affecting ticket sales when Iowa travels to other schools. Take the University of Nebraska as an example. Last weekend, the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers played in front of a sold-out crowd. And scenes like that are happening everywhere. What’s more, Caitlin’s fans are both men and women, young and old. This is more than simply a glass ceiling broken. Caitlin has shown us great, is great. No labels or caveats are needed. She has made her mark on women’s college basketball for sure. But more, she’s made her mark on sports – and culture. Her name came up during football’s biggest week, when Patrick Mahomes was asked to reflect on her accomplishments. As Iowan’s aren’t fortunate we get to witness this young woman break records and stereotypes. Thank you, Caitlin for all you’ve done for women, for basketball and for Iowa. Well done.
