But as the enforcement work has begun, what has followed is *** growing level of confusion, fear, and worry among immigrant families and their communities, and this fear is leading to *** rash of rumors and false information flooding social media. And other platforms here in our newsroom we've taken dozens of calls where people are reporting *** wide range of stories on immigration enforcement that they've heard and to date nearly every lead we've checked out has proven to be false. They were just rumors fueled by the growing concern in several cases, callers claimed law enforcement was rounding up immigrant students at schools in our viewing area, and to date all these reports have proven false. We empathize with the growing concerns of our neighbors. But as with any news, unchecked rumors and innuendo can spread like wildfire, and this can be especially destructive, especially when emotions are already high before sharing news or social media posts, check the source, work to confirm the information, and in the meantime, we ask our local, state, and federal leaders to clear up confusion and provide greater clarity, help lower the temperature of this emotional situation, and even more importantly, we ask our leaders to apply the same sense of urgency. To fixing our broken immigration system, not just enforcement here in Iowa, there are countless examples of immigrants who are living peaceful lives, contributing to their community and helping make our world better.
