Drake's Katie Dinnebier trading in her jersey and basketball shoes for a lab coat
For most basketbal lplayers, making it to the pro ranks is EVERYTHING Katie Dinnebier is NOT most basketball players.. vlog's Jeff Dubrof has the story. <Katie Dinnebier-I love basketball and I wouldn't trade my career for the world but you gotta retire at some point.> Katie Dinnebier is officially saying good game. the game she loves. <Katie Dinnebier-it was a really tough decision. because I do love basketball> Announcing Monday night she'd be opting out of the WNBA draft <I would've never thought I'd have the opportunity to play professional basketball.> Mock drafts did not have Dinnebier as a projected pick. The other options was going international. <I honestly didn't want to go overseas. It was WNBA or bust.> And after days of talking it over. ultimately this was the right decision for me. Dinnebier's playing career is done. <I would give anything to be on that court one more time.> And what a career it was. From Miss Iowa Basketball at Waukee to back to back valley player of the year for the Bulldogs. Katie Dinnebier is a central Iowa great. <It's crazy, if you would've told my younger self that I would laughed and been like are you crazy.> What's she doing next? <I think I have always been a nerd. I've said it since I got to Drake. I love school. I have openly said that and I own that.> She's trading in the basketball shoes for the lab coat. <My goal has always been to be a doctory. Always been to go to Pharmacy school. and get my degree.> She'll be continue to pursue her degree at Drake's Pharmacy School. And for the first time ever... it's her only focus... the only thing on her schedule. <Jeff question: is it gonna be weird walking on campus and there's a track athlete or something that's sprinting to get somewhere and you're like that... that's not me anymore.> <Dinnebier answer: yeah I'd say it's bittersweet. Like I kind of liked running to practice and having somewhere to be but it's gonna be really nice. College athletics is really hard. So it will be a really big relief to just be a student.> Meaning she'll be at the knapp center next season... just sitting in the student section instead of on the bench. <I'm excited to be back and be the number one fan in the crowd> having to introduce herself to people in a different way now <I used to say Hi I'm Katie dinnebier, Drake women's basketball player. I can't say that anymore. Now It's just hi I'm Katie and that's weird!> Jeff Dubrof vlog Iowa's Sports Leade

"I love basketball, and I wouldn't trade my career for the world, but you gotta retire at some point," Dinnebier told vlog after announcing on Monday night that she'd be opting out of the WNBA draft.

"I would've never thought I'd have the opportunity to play professional basketball," Dinnebier said.

However, mock drafts did not have Dinnebier as a projected pick. Her other option was to play in an international league, an option she decided was not for her.

"I honestly didn't want to go overseas," she said. "It was WNBA or bust."

After taking some time to think it over, Dinnebier decided it was time to trade her jersey and basketball shoes for a lab coat.

"Ultimately, this was the right decision for me," she said. "My goal has always been to be a doctor, always been to go to pharmacy school and get my degree."

Dinnebier will continue to pursue her degree at Drake's Pharmacy School, though she'll still have to adjust to a new normal.

"I used to say, 'Hi, I'm Katie Dinnebier, Drake women's basketball player.' I can't say that anymore. Now, it's just, 'Hi, I'm Katie,' and that's weird," she said.

She said next year will be bittersweet without basketball but that she's relieved to just be a student and cheer on her Bulldogs from the student section.

"I'm excited to be back (at the Knapp Center) and be the No. 1 fan in the crowd," she said.
