Drake claims top Missouri Valley Conference awards after historic season
Drake's magical men's basketball season is earning recognition from its conference.
The Missouri Valley Conference announced its end-of-season honors Wednesday morning. To no surprise, the 17-3 league-champion Bulldogs had multiple honorees.
Bennett Stirtz earned the Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year award. Stirtz led the league in scoring (18.9 points per game), assists (5.9 per game) and steals (2.2 per game). He is the national leader in total minutes played.
Stirtz, who transferred in from Northwest Missouri State along with head coach Ben McCollum, was also given the Newcomer of the Year award.
McCollum claimed the Coach of the Year award in his first season in Des Moines. McCollum also figures to be in consideration for various national coach of the year awards, given his success in his first season at the Division I level.
Drake's Tavion Banks grabbed the Sixth Man of the Year award after averaging more than 10 points and 5 rebounds per game during MVC play.
Northern Iowa's Tytan Anderson earned recognition as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Stirtz and Anderson both made first-team All-MVC.
