Former president Donald Trump came to this courthouse in Manhattan making *** rare voluntary appearance before *** judge, not in one of the four criminal cases against him, but as *** defendant in *** lawsuit that could upend his business empire. Now, last week, the judge in this case, Arthur Ere, he ruled that Donald Trump committed years of fraud by giving banks and insurance companies and others financial statements that inflated his wealth by billions of dollars and inflated the value of assets like skyscrapers and golf courses as punishment. The judge said that he's taking away some of Donald Trump's companies and that could lead to taking away some of his prized assets like Trump tower, like office buildings, etcetera. So Donald Trump came to court today and sat at the defense table throughout opening statements throughout testimony and when he was coming and going at breaks at one point, he made *** disgusted look in the direction of New York Attorney General, Letitia James who filed this lawsuit. And another time he scowled at her at lunch. He called for the judge's disbarment said he should face criminal charges for his handling of this case. But at the end of the day, Trump seemed happier because what he had heard from the judge was that maybe there are questions about the relevance of some testimony and that might go to an argument. The defense has that some of these allegations are way out of date and barred by the statute of limitations. This trial could last three months. So what you hear on day one might not factor at all into how the case plays out. But Donald Trump was here today, he may be back tomorrow and at some point he's going to testify as *** witness.
