Donald Trump will return to the White House as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, becoming the first president since Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms.
"This is as moving as any ceremony Washington has," Hearst Political Analyst Marc Sandalow said. "It is the transfer from arguably the most powerful person in the world to another."
More history is being made because of cold weather. For the first time in 40 years, the ceremony will be indoors, bringing the number of ticketed guests from 250,000 to just 600.
President Joe Biden will attend the ceremony, a notable difference from four years ago when Trump refused to attend Biden's inauguration.
Meanwhile, Washington is under tight security with a record 30 miles of fencing and barriers surrounding the Capitol, coordinated by the Secret Service and involving 25,000 security personnel, including Capitol and local police, officers from around the country, and the National Guard.
"There are no law enforcement agencies that are more unified than those trusted in securing the presidential inauguration," Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department said in a press conference.
Trump will start his day with a church service and tea at the White House before the swearing-in ceremony where his inaugural address is expected to focus on unity, strength, and fairness.
Following the oath, he will sign documents to appoint his cabinet and enact "Day One" promises made during his campaign.
Several big names in tech, including leaders from X, Amazon, Meta, and TikTok, are expected to attend the inauguration, along with conservative foreign leaders such as Argentina's president, Italy's premier, and China's vice president.
Performances by Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Nelly, Jason Aldean, and Village People are also scheduled for the inauguration ceremony and inaugural balls.
In addition to Trump's historic return, J.D. Vance will become the third-youngest vice president in U.S. history.
