Doctors are concerned as rural hospitals lack beds, staff amid pandemic
Studies show more rural residents are at risk of severe COVID-19 because of age and health conditions than those living in urban areas.
Jasper County has 37,000 residents. MercyOne Newton Medical Center is a 48 bed hospital that has staffing right now to take care of about 25 patients.
Chad Kelly, with MercyOne, said hospitals urgently need the public's help to wear masks and socially distance to stop this surge. About 43 of MercyOne affiliated hospitals are helping each other, communicating daily about new treatments and where beds are available.
Since the pandemic began, more rural hospitals have acquired necessary technology like ventilators to try to keep patients in their hometowns.
Doctors are warning that rural hospitals could be especially hit hard and become more overwhelmed as the flu season begin.
