It looks like . Joining "The Lion King" and "Aladdin," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" will be getting a remake, too, this time in the version of a live-action musical simply titled "Hunchback."
Disney officials announced Wednesday that Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang ("M. Butterfly," "Chinglish," "Yellow Face") will bring the story to life on the big screen, while Alan Menken ("Wicked," "Godspell," "Pippin") and Stephen Schwartz ("Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin") will write the music for the production. The film will gather inspiration both from the 1996 animated film and the corresponding book by 19th century romantic novelist Victor Hugo.
Mandeville Filmes, who produced the 2017 live-action remake of "Beauty and the Beast," is producing "Hunchback" along with .
David Hoberman, the former president of film at Disney, had his heart set on creating a live-action remake for the film for three decades, according to . The first attempt created the animated film, and the second resulted in a short-lived TV series on the ABC network.
Though there's no solid casting for the film yet, you can always rewatch the Disney classic and cast your bets for who will score the lead roles in the meantime. While it's not confirmed, fans think Gad might also be tapped for the lead role.
