Des Moines police say a home exploded Sunday morning, and natural gas is the likely cause.According to police, a large explosion caused significant structural damage Sunday morning to a home in the 4300 block of SE 11th Street. A preliminary investigation by police and fire personnel shows a natural gas flow within the home was a contributing factor.Three people inside the home at the time all escaped unharmed, police say.Neighbors including Steve Jones and his wife hustled to the home to help as they could. "I came back and got some Channellocks and turned the gas off," Jones said. The investigation continues, but investigators believe the explosion and fire were likely caused by a natural gas leak from pipes inside the home."I highly recommend working with a licensed contractor to do that work," said Nick Woofter with MidAmerican Energy.Woofter advised that the only reliable indicator of a gas leak is its characteristic rotten egg odor.He urged anyone who detects this smell to immediately move to a safe location and call the emergency line for assistance. The Des Moines Fire Department revealed that six to eight people, including children and adults, were inside the home during the explosion."To have that many children and adults in one space, and for everyone to walk out of there unscathed, that is an absolute miracle. And it is an amazing thing," said Ahman Douglass, a Des Moines firefighter.Police say residents with questions about natural gas safety should consult MidAmerican Energy.» Subscribe to 糖心vlog's YouTube page» Download the free 糖心vlog app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play
