ERIC: YOU SEE, 3 DECADES AGO, RANDY’S DAD HAD ONE AND GUSHED OVER EVERYTHING BETWEEN ITS HOOD ORNAMENT AND SHINY BUMPER. >> THAT IS A FLATHEAD SIX, FLUID DRIVE, THREE SPEED ON THE TREE. ERIC: RAY SEWICK EVEN POSED WITH IT ONE LAST TIME IN 1990 MINUTES BEFORE SIGNING ITS BILL OF SALE AND WATCHING IT PULL AWAY TO NEBRASKA. >> I HAVEN’T SEEN THE CAR SINCE THE WEEKEND AT LEFT. ERIC: RANDY ADMITS THE LAST 7 YEARS OF -- >> MY FATHER PASSED IN 2011. ERIC: HE HADN’T EVEN THOUGHT OF IT UNTIL HE WAS TAGGED IN A FACEBOOK POST LAST MONTH. IT SAID A BLUE ’49 DODGE WAS FOR SALE IN NEBRASKA. >> IMMEDIATELY, IT BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF MY DAD. ERIC: THE PICTURES OF THE CAR LOOKED FAMILIAR, BUT WHEN HE SAW THE ONE SHOWING THE BILL OF SALE, HE HEADED STRAIGHT TO HIS MOM’S HOUSE. >> I SHOWED IT TO HER AND YOU HAD A BIG SMILE ON HER FACE, BUT SHE TEARED UP. SHE SAID, THAT IS DAD’S HANDWRITING. I SAID, YEAH MOM, THAT IS HIS CAR. SO IT WAS PRETTY COOL. ERIC: SINCE HE BROUGHT THAT DODGE BACK HOME TO IOWA THIS WEEK? IT’S BEEN SINKING I >> THIS WAS MY FATHER’S CAR. MY DAD HAD THIS CAR. ERIC: BUT THE FIRST TIME RANDY PULLED IT BACK INTO HIS PARENTS’ DRIVEWAY? >> OH, DAD’S CAR. [LAUGHING] ERIC: IT ALMOST FELT LIKE HIS MOM AND DAD WERE BACK TOGETHER TOO. YES, YOU JUST DO. YOU NEVER GIVE UP ON LOVING HIM WERE MISSING HIM, EVEN THOUGH IT IS SEVEN YEARS. WE WERE MARRIED HIM WAS 59 YEARS. THAT IS A LONG TIME WITH THE SAME HUSBAND. SO WHY NOT CELEBRATE, THEY ERIC: FIGURED, WITH A CRUISE. >> A NICE DAY FOR A DRIVE THOUGH. ERIC: PAST ALL THE SPOTS HE LOVED. >> THAT IS DAD’S OLD SHOP THERE WE HAD >> RIGHT THERE WHERE IT SAYS ARMSTRONG PLUMBING AND HEATING. ERIC: AND IN BETWEEN, STORIES. ABOUT THE MAN THEY BOTH LOVE. >> WE HAD A BIG BACKYARD. ERIC: NEGLECT A CAR FOR DECADES AND IT CAN RUST. BUT CARE FOR IT AND A CLASSIC CAN BECOME A TIME MACHINE, LOADED WITH MEMORIES. >> I MISS MY FATHER DEARLY. LOADED WITH MEMORIES. >> AND THEY ARE WONDERFUL. WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITHOUT THEM? I MEAN, THE GOOD ONES, YOU KNOW. [LAUGHING] ERIC: PICKING UP FOR MORE EVERY MILE IT CRUISES AROUND TOWN WITH MOM. >> AND THAT WOULD BE SO PROUD TO THINK THAT HIS CAR IS BACK IN THE FAMILY.
